eBay and PayPal to Accept Bitcoin Payments through Braintree

eBay and PayPal to Accept Bitcoin Payments through Braintree

In their recent SEC filing, eBay and PayPal confirmed plans to allow merchants with a standard account to accept bitcoin payments through third-party processor Braintree. This company was acquired by eBay for $800 million in September 2013 and will now be part of PayPal Holdings.

In the same SEC filing, eBay and PayPal have announced the formation of a new corporation called PayPal Holdings that will take over the businesses in eBay’s payments segment. Meanwhile, eBay will continue to operate its marketplace business as a publicly traded corporation.

“As two distinct publicly traded corporations, eBay and PayPal will be better positioned to capitalize on significant growth opportunities and focus their resources on their respective businesses and strategic priorities,” according to the eBay announcement.

Bitcoin Payments Structure

Braintree works in partnership with Coinbase in allowing online sellers to merchants to accept bitcoin payments seamlessly. It also enables customers to pay with bitcoin instantly and securely on any device without manually transferring bitcoin or scanning QR codes.

Currently in public beta, Braintree’s bitcoin payments service claims to have zero transaction fees on the first $1 million in bitcoin sales and a 1% fee for cashing out to a bank account.

With the increased focus on the payments sector, PayPal Holdings can be able to explore new transaction methods such as bitcoin payments, along with Apple Pay and Venno Payments via Braintree. In addition, management can better enjoy the flexibility to pursue new partnership and strategic opportunities that may have previously been unavailable.

Merchants and online shoppers are hopeful that the acceptance of bitcoin payments by these companies could help foster mainstream acceptance of the cryptocurrency. According to Braintree, it will take care of the conversion, transfer, and transaction reporting that fits in with the existing Braintree workflow. “Bitcoin transactions are confirmed in less than a few seconds, eliminating chargebacks, which reduces your exposure to online fraud,” as indicated in its invitation to clients.

On eBay right now, you can buy a Complete Cryptocurrency GPU Mining Rig for $2,586, or a “Just Hodl” (a bitcoin inside joke) hoodie for $33.99, or a “collectible bitcoin gift coin” for 99 cents. There are hundreds of bitcoin-related items, but you can’t pay in bitcoin. Yet.

Scott Cutler, senior vice president of eBay Americas, told Yahoo Finance in an interview this week that the online retailer is “seriously considering” accepting bitcoin, but “we’re not quite there yet.”

Not many retailers accept cryptocurrency as payment, but for one that does accept bitcoin, it’s been a boost to shares. Overstock.com (OSTK) is up more than 250% in the last six months, as it rides the bitcoin phenomenon. The web retailer is a pioneer in the cryptocurrency space, as it became the first major retailer to accept bitcoin in early 2014.

Payments in bitcoin aren’t exactly becoming commonplace, but they are slowly becoming more common: even a New York City preschool is accepting bitcoin for tuition. At some point in November, mobile-payments company Square (SQ) quietly rolled out a new feature to a small number of users on its Square Cash app: the ability to buy and hold bitcoin. Square CEO Jack Dorsey (also CEO of Twitter) told Yahoo Finance in October, “There’s nothing more impactful to our business than digital currency.”

As for eBay, it is currently focused on delivering a strong holiday season, as it tries to compete with Amazon. The retailer is working on expanding its offerings, shipping times, and return process.

In the search for Anaïs Nin, one of the first few links shows a picture of a man. Why? Since Nin is a woman, I can’t figure out why. Can you show some reason for this? Who is he? If you click on the picture a group of pictures of Nin and no mention of that man. Is it an error?

Repair the Yahoo Search App.

Yahoo Search App from the Google Play Store on my Samsung Galaxy S8+ phone stopped working on May 18, 2018.

I went to the Yahoo Troubleshooting page but the article that said to do a certain 8 steps to fix the problem with Yahoo Services not working and how to fix the problem. Of course they didn't work.

I contacted Samsung thru their Samsung Tutor app on my phone. I gave their Technican access to my phone to see if there was a problem with my phone that stopped the Yahoo Search App from working. He went to Yahoo and I signed in so he could try to fix the Yahoo Search App not working. He also used another phone, installed the app from the Google Play Store to see if the app would do any kind of search thru the app. The Yahoo Search App just wasn't working.

I also had At&t try to help me because I have UVERSE for my internet service. My internet was working perfectly. Their Technical Support team member checked the Yahoo Search App and it wouldn't work for him either.

We can go to www.yahoo.com and search for any topic or website. It's just the Yahoo Search App that won't allow anyone to do web searches at all.

I let Google know that the Yahoo Search App installed from their Google Play Store had completely stopped working on May 18, 2018.

I told them that Yahoo has made sure that their Yahoo members can't contact them about anything.

I noticed that right after I accepted the agreement that said Oath had joined with Verizon I started having the problem with the Yahoo Search App.

EBay ‘Seriously Considering’ Adding Bitcoin Payments

EBay, one of the world’s largest e-commerce platforms, is considering making the leap into cryptocurrency payments, according to a high-ranking company executive.

EBay ‘Seriously Considering’ Adding Bitcoin Payments

Scott Cutler, senior vice president of eBay Americas, told Yahoo Finance that the e-commerce giant is holding serious discussions about becoming the highest-profile company to accept cryptocurrency payments.

“This is a trend that everybody is talking about, but sadly, at eBay, we don’t currently accept bitcoin as a form of payment, Cutler said. “We’re seriously considering it as these cryptocurrencies become more of a mainstream” payment instrument, but “we’re not quite there yet.”

Cutler added that the website serves as a popular secondary market for cryptocurrency mining hardware, and third-party sellers have listed thousands of other cryptocurrency-related collectibles.

Cryptocurrency Enters Main Street

Although it does not appear that eBay currently has any concrete plans to adopt cryptocurrency payments, the fact that the company is holding high-level discussions on the matter is the latest testament to how quickly bitcoin has permeated the mainstream.

Last week, bitcoin brokerage app Coinbase briefly became the top app in the Apple Store, signaling that retail investors were onboarding into the bitcoin ecosystem at a breakneck pace — a pace so rapid that Coinbase has suffered persistent outages due to record traffic.

This week, the first bitcoin futures contracts launched on U.S. exchange CBOE, and CME — the world’s largest derivatives exchange — will begin trading bitcoin futures next week. Though primarily targeted at Wall Street, futures are expected to lead to the creation of the first Bitcoin ETF, a retail investor-friendly investment vehicle that can be easily held in brokerage and retirement accounts.

The next watershed moment will be when cryptocurrency becomes so ubiquitous that businesses commonly accept it as payment for goods or services.

Prominent retailers such as Overstock and Newegg have accepted bitcoin for years, but none of retail’s white whales — a group that includes eBay, Amazon, and Alibaba — has formally adopted cryptocurrency payments. Earlier this year, CCN debunked a rumor that Amazon was planning to accept bitcoin. Recently, Alibaba co-founder Jack Ma stated that bitcoin was “ not for me ,” indicating that the Chinese conglomerate is not likely to adopt a currency that operates without government backing.

Some retailers, including video game distribution platform Steam, have actually stopped accepting bitcoin payments in recent months, citing increasing transaction fees that have accompanied bitcoin’s meteoric rise. However, bitcoin remains an option for big-ticket items, and altcoins such as ethereum, bitcoin cash, and litecoin are practical options for small-value transactions.

eBay to allow Bitcoin sales in 'virtual currency' category

After PayPal President David Marcus tweeted "We're believers in BTC," eBay's US and UK branches say they will let people sell digital currencies in the classified ads sections of the sites.

It seemed like it was only a matter of time before e-commerce giant eBay and its payment platform PayPal addressed the sale and use of Bitcoin on its sites. And, despite concern from government regulators , it appears the company believes in virtual currencies -- so much so, that it will soon start allowing their sale on its US and UK sites.

Last week, PayPal President David Marcus tweeted "To clarify: we have no policies against using PayPal to sell Bitcoin mining rigs. We don't support any currency txn whether fiat or BTC. for a host of regulatory issues. But we treat BTC and any FX txn the same way. We're believers in BTC though."

Then, a couple of days later, eBay UK sent an e-mail to one of its merchants that was published on Reddit, which said the company plans to open a "Virtual Currency" category for the sale of Bitcoin and other digital currencies on the UK site.

Please know that per our recent policy update, Virtual Currency (i.e. Bitcoin and Litecoin), whether digitally or physically delivered, cannot be listed in Auction-style or Buy-It-Now listing formats. eBay is opening a Virtual Currency category to allow the sale of virtual currency in Classified Ads format on February 10, 2014. We request that you do not list these items until that date. Please be informed that repeated breach of the policy may further jeopardize your account status. To avoid any inconvenience in future, we'd appreciated it if you go through our help pages or contact us before listing any such items.

While eBay US and UK will start allowing Bitcoin to be sold in its classified ads format, it won't yet let users sell the currency in the auction or buy-it-now formats. Additionally, all transactions will be required to happen outside of eBay. A eBay UK spokesman told CNET that virtual currency sales will only be allowed on eBay US and eBay UK for now; it's unclear if the policy will spread to other countries where eBay operates.

"To promote a trustworthy marketplace and ensure compliance with applicable regulations, eBay is updating its Currency Policy ," eBay UK spokesman Steve Heywood told CNET in an e-mail. "The updated policy clarifies that listings for Bitcoin and other similar virtual currencies must be listed in the Virtual Currency Category in the Classified Ad format. This applies to both the US (effective immediately) and the UK (effective 10 February)."

Marcus told CNET in an interview last month , "I really like Bitcoin. I own bitcoins." But, he also said he's not yet ready to let people link their Bitcoin wallets with their PayPal accounts. "Whenever the regulatory framework is clearer, and the volatility comes down, then we'll consider it," he said.

Bitcoin has proven that it can do well as a traded currency. It's been around since 2009, but didn't really get going until 2011 when it was worth $2 per coin. By 2013, the currency had climbed to $20 per coin, and then jumped to $266 last April. Within the past couple of months, it had another price jump and is now hovering around $1,000.

While eBay appears to be opening its doors to virtual currency, China's largest e-commerce site Alibaba shut the door on Bitcoin earlier this month. The company announced that the sale of Bitcoins on its Web site is now banned. While the majority of site's sales are made via Taobao's Alipay system, a handful of merchants were accepting Bitcoin payments or selling the digital currency.
