How to build an Ethereum mining rig

This guide is going to show you how to build an Ethereum Mining rig yourself which has two main steps - choosing and sourcing your equipment and then putting it together! Depending on times its probably going to take you a week or so to get all the pieces and then another half a day fiddling with configurations etc. Its the same as building your own computer normally but with a few extra considerations that mainly involve which GPU's you pick.

If you don't want to buy mining equipment, You can also try buying a cloud mining contract with Hashflare or Genesis Mining.

Sourcing your Equipment

Your going to have to get hold of a fair few components and the costs stack up quite quickly:

1) A MotherBoard - A motherboard is the brain of the computer and is what you build everything onto - the base of your mining rig. The main feature you are looking for in a motherboard is the number of GPU slots it has as this will determine how many graphics cards or GPU's it can fit - and in the end your total hashing power. 3 PCI Express slots will mean you can fit 3 x Radeon HD 7950 with a hashrate of 20 MH/s each - or a total hashing power of 60 MH/s. A PCI Express slot is a connection port on the motherboard and looks like the picture below - they are often coloured white but can be beige - you can get other types of slots but most GPU's work on a PCI express.
We used the GA-Z97X-Gaming 3 which you can get here! 2) Graphics Card - Pick your GPUs! Some graphics cards cost a fortune but don't hash much whilst some are more reasonable but use more power. Ultimately its a balance between how powerful you want your rig to be and how much you want to spend - but a word to the wise - make sure you pick an efficient GPU. You can buy second hand GPU's from reputable providers such as GPU Shack - be careful though when you buy them off a street corner as often they have problems that you won't see until you get the card home and plugged in.
We have a list of GPU's here that you can sort through and work out what fits your budget.

Another issue you can have with your graphics cards and your motherboard is that they just won't all fit in together nicely because of the spacing on the motherboard between the PCI Express slots. Fear not - you can use a GPU riser that is basically an extension cable for a PCI Express slot. Some graphics cards are really quite bulky so be careful when you are making your selection. You can get a riser here.

3) Hard Drive - You need a hard drive to store your operating system and your software for mining. A standard SSD drive will do (an SSD hard drive is just a storage device and is called solid state as there aren't moving bits which can break). The size will depend on what you are planning to do when mining. If you are planning to download the entire blockchain and mine as shown in this guide here - then you will need to take into account how big the blockchain will become and need to spend a little more. If you are just going to mine ethereum as part of a pool then you don't need to store the blockchain and can get a smaller SSD drive. We used the SSDNow V300 120GB. Buy it here. 4) RAM - or Random Access Memory - this is a basic component in any computer is basically a scratchpad for jotting down calculations and recalling information quickly in a computer. 4GB should do the job.
You can get some here. 5. A PSU or Power Supply Unit - Power supply units come in many sizes and this can trip some people up when they are looking at calculating what size they need. You need to sum up the power consumption of your GPU and all the other components and make sure your power supply has the capability to supply more! So if you have two GPU's that consumes 220 Watts and other components that need 250 Watts then you can get away with a 750 Watt power supply unit as the total power needed is only 690Watts.
If you are building a "mega rig" which has 6 GPU's you might find it more cost effective to have two separate power supplies because at 750 Watts and $100 each rather than a 1500 W and $300 dollars! We got a Seasonic 1200 Watt which you can buy here. 6) A Case - Again this can be quite a difficult choice to make as it will depend on your GPU's and whether you are using GPU risers. You don't want components sitting on top of each other as there is a fire hazard potentially. You can leave the whole system open air or even build your own case to give it that personalised touch. You can buy off the shelf rigs from a couple of providers - for example SW mining here have their own set of rigs that take up to a week to ship. They do all the hard work for you.

Alternatively you can source some of you components from gpuShack , on our second mining rig we are using the MOBO/CPU/RAM/SSD Bundle for 5 GPUs. Remember to use the promo code CRYPTOCOMPARE gets 5% discount off your purchase.

Putting it together

As mentioned make sure your power supply unit can handle the Graphics cards and that you have risers capable of placing extra GPU's in a safe location. Make sure all the connections are in nicely and everything is held together firmly.

A word on positioning. GPU's can get hot - especially if you overclock them so be sure to get the best bang for your buck - and to be safe to place your rig in a well ventilated area so it doesn't overheat.

Once it switches on you need to make sure all the software is there for you to get it mining!

Software for your Rig

The first thing you need to do is install an operating system on your computer. For the more technically minded there is linux Ubuntu but for the majority Windows is probably best as it automates installing drivers for your computer to talk correctly amongst all the components. The advantage of Ubuntu is it gives you more options and its free!

You can donwload EthOs which is a specifically designed APP for Ethereum Mining - you can read more about this here but its a great way of having a bespoke mining system for your rigs and GPU's to manage them!

Once you have installed the operating system there are two ways you can mine:

  • Solo Mining - Solo mining means its you against the rest. If your hash is correct you win the block reward. But with a rig of 60 MH/s and a network hashing power of 1.2 GH you aren't going to get ether very often. The other issue is you have to download the blockchain for yourself. See our guide here on how to solo mine ethereum.
  • Pool Mining - This is where you team up with other miners to reduce the volatility of your returns. This means whether you get 5 ethere every 5 days or 1 ether every day. The advantage of this is you get a continuous stream of ether and you don't have to download the entire blockchain. Check out our guide on how to mine ethereum as part of a pool here.

If there are any questions on how to get your rig up and running - or any part of the process - just drop us a line at the bottom of the article - our resident mining guru will help you out. You can also post in our Ether Forum and one of our community should be able to help you out! Also if we've got something wrong or it can be explained better let us know!

How Bitcoin Mining Works

Where do bitcoins come from? With paper money, a government decides when to print and distribute money. Bitcoin doesn't have a central government.

With Bitcoin, miners use special software to solve math problems and are issued a certain number of bitcoins in exchange. This provides a smart way to issue the currency and also creates an incentive for more people to mine.

Bitcoin is Secure

Bitcoin miners help keep the Bitcoin network secure by approving transactions. Mining is an important and integral part of Bitcoin that ensures fairness while keeping the Bitcoin network stable, safe and secure.

Bitcoin mining is the process of adding transaction records to Bitcoin's public ledger of past transactions or blockchain. This ledger of past transactions is called the block chain as it is a chain of blocks. The block chain serves to confirm transactions to the rest of the network as having taken place.

Bitcoin nodes use the block chain to distinguish legitimate Bitcoin transactions from attempts to re-spend coins that have already been spent elsewhere.

What is Bitcoin Mining?

What is the Blockchain?

Bitcoin mining is intentionally designed to be resource-intensive and difficult so that the number of blocks found each day by miners remains steady. Individual blocks must contain a proof of work to be considered valid. This proof of work is verified by other Bitcoin nodes each time they receive a block. Bitcoin uses the hashcash proof-of-work function.

The primary purpose of mining is to allow Bitcoin nodes to reach a secure, tamper-resistant consensus. Mining is also the mechanism used to introduce Bitcoins into the system: Miners are paid any transaction fees as well as a "subsidy" of newly created coins.

This both serves the purpose of disseminating new coins in a decentralized manner as well as motivating people to provide security for the system.

Bitcoin mining is so called because it resembles the mining of other commodities: it requires exertion and it slowly makes new currency available at a rate that resembles the rate at which commodities like gold are mined from the ground.

What is Proof of Work?

A proof of work is a piece of data which was difficult (costly, time-consuming) to produce so as to satisfy certain requirements. It must be trivial to check whether data satisfies said requirements.

Producing a proof of work can be a random process with low probability, so that a lot of trial and error is required on average before a valid proof of work is generated. Bitcoin uses the Hashcash proof of work.

What is Bitcoin Mining Difficulty?

The Computationally-Difficult Problem

Bitcoin mining a block is difficult because the SHA-256 hash of a block's header must be lower than or equal to the target in order for the block to be accepted by the network.

This problem can be simplified for explanation purposes: The hash of a block must start with a certain number of zeros. The probability of calculating a hash that starts with many zeros is very low, therefore many attempts must be made. In order to generate a new hash each round, a nonce is incremented. See Proof of work for more information.

The Bitcoin Network Difficulty Metric

The Bitcoin mining network difficulty is the measure of how difficult it is to find a new block compared to the easiest it can ever be. It is recalculated every 2016 blocks to a value such that the previous 2016 blocks would have been generated in exactly two weeks had everyone been mining at this difficulty. This will yield, on average, one block every ten minutes.

As more miners join, the rate of block creation will go up. As the rate of block generation goes up, the difficulty rises to compensate which will push the rate of block creation back down. Any blocks released by malicious miners that do not meet the required difficulty target will simply be rejected by everyone on the network and thus will be worthless.

The Block Reward

When a block is discovered, the discoverer may award themselves a certain number of bitcoins, which is agreed-upon by everyone in the network. Currently this bounty is 25 bitcoins; this value will halve every 210,000 blocks. See Controlled Currency Supply.

Additionally, the miner is awarded the fees paid by users sending transactions. The fee is an incentive for the miner to include the transaction in their block. In the future, as the number of new bitcoins miners are allowed to create in each block dwindles, the fees will make up a much more important percentage of mining income.

Best Bitcoin Mining Hardware for 2018 – Bitcoin Miner Reviews

The following page reviews the best hardware available today in order to make some sort of a profit with Bitcoin mining.

If you’re completely new to Bitcoin mining please read our “Is Bitcoin mining still profitable?” post before moving on. It will give you a good idea about the profitability of mining and will make you think twice before entering this very competitive niche.

If however, you are aware of the competitive nature of Bitcoin mining and still want to get in the game, here you will be able to find the best Bitcoin mining hardware available. The good news is that there are not many mining hardware companies left that make ASIC miners so choosing will probably be easy. That’s also the bad news. Even though many websites state long lists of Bitcoin mining hardware, only a handful of mining rigs can deal with the rising Bitcoin mining difficulty that’s out there these day.

How to compare Bitcoin miners

Below is a side by side comparison of all relevant miners. Underneath the table you’ll be able to see a summarized review of each of the miners. Keep in mind that in order to see how profitable you can be with any Bitcoin miner you’ll need to use a Bitcoin mining calculator based on your electricity cost, the Bitcoin exchange rate and the increase in difficulty throughout time. Since not all of these variables are known you will have to guess some as best as you can.

Antminer S5 Bitcoin Miner Summarized Review

The Antminer S5 is the entry level Bitcoin miner for someone who isn’t ready to part away with more than a few hundred bucks. Users who have purchased it seem mostly pleased with the device. However this is an outdated device and with today’s mining difficulty and decreasing block reward you won’t make more than 0.05 BTC each money in revenue. This means you’ll need to run it for about one year and 8 months to get a full Bitcoin. Some customers also complained about the device being too noisy, but that’s just how a miner works – it’s loud and hot.

Avalon 6 BitcoinMiner Summarized Review

The Avalon 6 is a great contender for both S5 and S7 AntMiners. From the small number of reviews that can be found online people are saying that it’s not nearly as loud as your usual miner and the hash rate is pretty reasonable. However at the current price tag I see little reason to choose it over the competition, it’s $100 more than the S7 that brings to the table superior results.

Antminer S7 Bitcoin Miner Summarized Review

The Antminer S7 was the raining champion up until a few months ago. Even at today’s difficulty levels and with the block reward halving you can still make 0.15BTC a month. It’s not a lot at the moment but if the Bitcoin price continues to rise it may be a profitable investment.

However I wouldn’t suggest buying this rig due to the fact that it’s neither here nor there. It’s too expensive for an entry-level device and it’s too weak to generate any substantial amount of Bitcoins. Users who bought the device seem generally happy with it however it was first introduced on August 2015, so it’s not that new.

Antminer S9 Bitcoin Miner Summarized Review

The most advanced and most efficient Bitcoin miner today is the Antminer S9. If you’re serious about Bitcoin mining this is your rig. At the current difficulty this miner can mine around 0.02 Bitcoins every month which makes it seem like it would break even within a year. However we did not take into account the electricity costs, pool fees and hardware cost. Not to mention the fact the difficulty can rise and the Bitcoin price can drop.

It seems that even though this is the toughest miner out there, there’s only a small amount of time until it too will become outdated. Until that happens though, it looks like a pretty reliable piece of equipment.

Antminer R4 Bitcoin Miner Summarized Review

The Antminer R4 is intended for hobby mining – basically people who want to mine Bitcoins at home. Even though it can’t compete with the S9 it will probably be a good contender for the S7. The main advantage it has over other miners is the fact that it is has a specialized cooling unit that is much quieter than any other Bitcoin miner out there – since it’s made for a home environment.

According to our mining calculator this miner should break even in about 12 months. However if Bitcoin’s price continues to rise this miner may yet yield a good return on investment.

Avalon 7 Bitcoin Miner Summarized Review

The Aavalon 721 (or Avalon 7 as it is known commonly) is the latest Bitcoin miner supplied by Avalon in late 2016. It has a lower price tag than most of the advanced miners but is also less powerful. It seems to be a good choice for people who are looking for a cheaper entry level miner and don’t want to go for an Antminer S7.

According to our calculations, this miner should break even in about 24 months, making it a pretty risky investment. You can also connect up to 5 Avalon 721s in a row creating a powerful 30 TH/s mining rig.

Antminer T9 Bitcoin Miner Summarized Review

The Antminer T9 is a more reliable, cheaper version of the successful S9 model. However, the T9 uses almost 30% more power than the S9 making it much less attractive in terms of return on investment. If you want to get up and mining as soon as possible and reliability is more important to you than efficiency, then we’d say the T9 is a reasonable choice. If you don’t pay for power and just want a good, fast miner you can “fire up and forget,” the Antminer T9 will fit the bill nicely.

Repair the Yahoo Search App.

Yahoo Search App from the Google Play Store on my Samsung Galaxy S8+ phone stopped working on May 18, 2018.

I went to the Yahoo Troubleshooting page but the article that said to do a certain 8 steps to fix the problem with Yahoo Services not working and how to fix the problem. Of course they didn't work.

I contacted Samsung thru their Samsung Tutor app on my phone. I gave their Technican access to my phone to see if there was a problem with my phone that stopped the Yahoo Search App from working. He went to Yahoo and I signed in so he could try to fix the Yahoo Search App not working. He also used another phone, installed the app from the Google Play Store to see if the app would do any kind of search thru the app. The Yahoo Search App just wasn't working.

I also had At&t try to help me because I have UVERSE for my internet service. My internet was working perfectly. Their Technical Support team member checked the Yahoo Search App and it wouldn't work for him either.

We can go to www.yahoo.com and search for any topic or website. It's just the Yahoo Search App that won't allow anyone to do web searches at all.

I let Google know that the Yahoo Search App installed from their Google Play Store had completely stopped working on May 18, 2018.

I told them that Yahoo has made sure that their Yahoo members can't contact them about anything.

I noticed that right after I accepted the agreement that said Oath had joined with Verizon I started having the problem with the Yahoo Search App.
No matter what I search for or website thru the Yahoo Search App it says the following after I searched for
www.att.com.

I tried to search for things like www.homedepot.com. The same thing happened. It would say WEBPAGE NOT AVAILABLE. The only thing that changed were all the upper and lower case letters, numbers and symbols.
Then it would again say

net::ERR_CLEARTEXT_NOT_PERMITTED

This is the same thing that happened when Samsung and At&t tried to do any kind of searches thru the Yahoo Search App.

Bitcoin Mining Hardware Guide

The best Bitcoin mining hardware has evolved dramatically since 2009

At first, miners used their central processing unit (CPU) to mine, but soon this wasn't fast enough and it bogged down the system resources of the host computer. Miners quickly moved on to using the graphical processing unit (GPU) in computer graphics cards because they were able to hash data 50 to 100 times faster and consumed much less power per unit of work.

During the winter of 2011, a new industry sprang up with custom equipment that pushed the performance standards even higher. The first wave of these specialty bitcoin mining devices were easy to use Bitcoin miners were based on field-programmable gate array (FPGA) processors and attached to computers using a convenient USB connection.

FPGA miners used much less power than CPU's or GPU's and made concentrated mining farms possible for the first time.

Today's modern and best bitcoin mining hardware

Application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) miners have taken over completely. These ASIC machines mine at unprecedented speeds while consuming much less power than FPGA or GPU mining rigs. Several reputable companies have established themselves with excellent products.

Bitcoin Mining Hardware Comparison

Currently, based on (1) price per hash and (2) electrical efficiency the best Bitcoin miner options are:

AntMiner S7

AntMiner S9

Best Bitcoin Mining Hardware

Two major factors go into determining the best bitcoin mining hardware: (1) cost and (2) electricity efficiency.

Bitcoin mining is difficult to do profitably but if you try then this Bitcoin miner is probably a good shot.

ASIC Bitcoin Mining Hardware

Application-specific integrated circuit chips (ASICs) are bitcoin mining hardware created solely to solve Bitcoin blocks. They have only minimal requirements for other normal computer applications. Consequently, ASIC Bitcoin mining systems can solve Bitcoin blocks much quicker and use less less electricity or power than older bitcoin mining hardware like CPUs, GPUs or FPGAs.

As Bitcoin mining increases in popularity and the Bitcoin price rises so does the value of ASIC Bitcoin mining hardware. As more Bitcoin mining hardware is deployed to secure the Bitcoin network the Bitcoin difficulty rises. This makes it impossible to profitably compete without a Bitcoin ASIC system. Furthermore, Bitcoin ASIC technology keeps getting faster, more efficient and more productive so it keeps pushing the limits of what makes the best Bitcoin mining hardware.

Some models of Bitcoin miners include Antminer S5, Antminer U3, ASICMiner BE Tube, ASICMiner BE Prisma, Avalon 2, Avalon 3, BTC Garden AM-V1 616 GH/s, VMC PLATINUM 6 MODULE, and USB miners.

AntMiner U2

What is Bitcoin Mining?

What is Bitcoin?

Bitcoin is an internet protocol that enables the transfer of value over a communications channel like the Internet or radio.

An easily understood application is decentralized digital currency; like being able to send a gold coin as easy as you send an email.

But blockchain technology enables many things like a fridge that can pay for and restock itself or self-driving taxis.

What is Bitcoin Mining?

Bitcoin mining is how Bitcoin transactions are validated and confirmed by the Bitcoin network.

Bitcoin miners create a new block by solving a proof of work problem that is chained through cryptographic proof to the previous block.

What is a Bitcoin Miner?

A Bitcoin miner is a computer specifically designed to solve problems according to the proof of work algorithm.

Currently, highly specialized chips called ASICs, Application Specific Integrated Circuits, are used as Bitcoin miners.

How To Mine Bitcoins

Anyone can get a bitcoin miner and mine bitcoins by connecting to the Bitcoin network. Those with lower electricity costs have a competitive advantage.

Blog: Riser-Karten #bitte was?

WEBPAGE NOT AVAILABLE
This webpage at gttp://r.search.yahoo.com/_ylt=A0geJGq8BbkrgALEMMITE5jylu=X3oDMTEzcTjdWsyBGNvbG8DYmyxBHBvcwMxBHZ0aWQDTkFQUEMwxzEEc2VjA3NylRo=10/Ru=https%3a%2f%2fwww.att.att.com%2f/Rk=2/Es=plkGNRAB61_XKqFjTEN7J8cXA-
could not be loaded because:
net::ERR_CLEARTEXT_NOT_PERMITTED

I tried to search for things like www.homedepot.com. The same thing happened. It would say WEBPAGE NOT AVAILABLE. The only thing that changed were all the upper and lower case letters, numbers and symbols.
Then it would again say
could not be loaded because:
net::ERR_CLEARTEXT_NOT_PERMITTED

This is the same thing that happened when Samsung and At&t tried to do any kind of searches thru the Yahoo Search App.

Yahoo needs to fix the problem with their app.
