Trezor to Implement Bitcoin Cash Addresses

After seeming to be outright hostile to incorporating Cashaddr, a way to distinguish easily between bitcoin core and bitcoin cash addresses, popular hardware cold storage wallet company Trezor confirmed its integration is on the way.

Twitter bitcoin cash advocate, Jason Elliott , began tweeting to hardware, cold storage wallet makers as to when their users could expect integration of Cashaddr, a bitcoin cash (BCH) ecosystem adopted standard for addresses to help limit confusion. Within the thread, Bach N. of Trezor responded, affirming Cashaddr to be in development for Trezor. His response came complete with a Github link, which appeared to confirm the tweet.

The Github leads to a Trezor MCU started the beginning of this year. Jochen Hoenicke is the developer/author of Cashaddr #285 . It has three commits, and includes Satoshi Labs’ Pavol Rusnak as a repository participant. Though it stops at the end of February, the most detail comes around the middle of that month.

“This needs to be done outside the firmware for cashaddr support,” Mr. Hoenicke explains, “Webwallet: compute cashaddr addresses from xpub. Note that only the last step from hashed public key to address needs to be changed. The webwallet checks that the address the Trezor returns is as expected. This check should also allow 1.. addresses so that it works with older firmware (so we don’t have to deploy both at the same time); allow cashaddr as send to address. The firmware supports both and both use SPENDADDRESS. The only difference is the confirmation message given to the user; the transaction format did not change at all.”

If true, it’s an interesting turn of events in the mini-drama surrounding the issue. Summer of last year, just prior to the fork creating bitcoin cash, it was Mr. Rusnak who warned through Github, “I suggest to change the address version to something different, so it is obvious the address is a Bitcoin Cash address. (It can start with C for example). Don’t forget to change also address version for P2SH!” It would turn out to be fateful advice, advice that, for whatever reason, was not initially followed.

Ideology Aside, Trezor Usually Yields to Customers

Recognized as a lead developer of bitcoin cash, Amaury Séchet (otherwise known as deadalnix), responded to Mr. Rusnak’s warning, “Agreed. I have a plan to change the address format. Changing the address format is expensive, so I would like to investigate various other option than just changing the prefix before settling on something. I would also have to convince other in the space that this is a good address format,” and eventually Cashaddr became that option.

Trezor, as soon as two weeks ago, responded to long time Reddit user u/normal_rc on the popular bitcoin cash forum, r/btc , about how the company was just outright refusing to add the address change. In response, the Trezor cofounder tweeted “This mess was made by bad architectural decision of [BCH] team. We warned them, they knew about the issues and they decided to ignore it. I refuse any responsibility for it. Cashaddr support is in standard development process and it’ll be ready when done.”

Though it reads as hostile, it does leave the door open to eventual implementation. Combined with the even more recent acknowledgment and Github activity, bitcoin cash users continue to have reasons to be hopeful about the coin’s future prospects.

Description : Trezor is a hardware wallet used for storing bitcoins without having to trust a third party. Essentially a USB dongle, it is designed to sign bitcoin transactions with private keys generated offline within the device.

It can be used to sign transactions on 'unsafe' computers and is impervious to keyloggers and other digital threats.

Setting up your Trezor device

1. Connect the device to your computer using the USB cable.

2. Go to myTrezor and download a browser plugin.

  • The process is automated, although you need to allow the plugin to install.

3. Once the plugin is activated, myTrezor will prompt you to choose a PIN.

  • You don't actually type the PIN, you have to click on an obscured numerical pad displayed in the browser.
  • The position of each number changes randomly, so every time you enter the PIN you will have to check your Trezor device for the layout.
  • An attacker using a simple keylogger, or even an attacker with complete remote access to the desktop, would not be able to determine the numbers, as they are displayed only on the Trezor device.

4. Next, you have to write down a randomly generated sequence of 24 words, also known as a 'seed'.

  • This seed will allow you to reconstruct your Trezor wallet in case you lose the device.
  • This is the only backup that can be used to recover your wallet in case of loss or theft.
  • Trezor uses BIP39 and BIP44 standards for creating new wallets, so the generated seed can be recovered and used by other compatible wallets.
  • Important: Never make a digital copy or recording or your recovery seed. It's a good idea to just use a pen and paper to note down your seed backup. Just remember to keep it somewhere safe.

Adding bitcoins to your Trezor/Receiving bitcoins

1. In myTrezor, click on "Account #1" on the left of the screen and you will see an empty Transactions tab.

2. Select the "Receive" tab to get your first Trezor bitcoin address (a long string of numbers and letters).

  • If you are transferring bitcoins from a mobile wallet, scan the QR code shown next to the address.

3. When someone makes a payment to you, you will see a green (incoming) transaction appear in the transactions pane.

  • At first, the transaction will be marked as "unconfirmed".
  • Transactions can take up to 15 minutes to go through completely.
  • When they do so, you will see the "unconfirmed" text replaced by the date and time of the transaction's completion

Making payments with Trezor

  • You can type in a destination address for your transaction and the amount you're sending.
  • You can scan a QR code connected with the recipient's wallet using myTrezor by pressing the scan QR code button in the address field and holding a picture of the QR code up to your computer's webcam.

3. You can send bitcoins to multiple addresses with one transaction by pressing the '+' button in the right hand corner of the Send page.

  • You can also choose to add multiple transactions by clicking on the "Import from CSV" button.

5. Confirm the transaction on your Trezor

  • If the amount and the payment address are correct, press the right button on your Trezor to confirm. If they are wrong, press 'cancel'.
  • Once you have confirmed the destination address(es) and amount(s) of your bitcoin transaction, your Trezor will display the total amount of the transaction along with the transaction fee. Make sure these are reasonable before pressing confirm.

Use the buttons to confirm or cancel a transaction.

6. You can watch the progress of your outgoing transactions by switching over to the Transactions window.

  • $99 price tag may be out of reach for those on a budget

TREZOR is a Bitcoin hardware wallet and launched in August 2014. It was the first Bitcoin hardware wallet, offering secure cold storage plus the ability to spend with the convenience of a hot wallet.

TREZOR is a small, key-sized device which connects to your computer with a USB cable. It stores your Bitcoin and cryptocurrency private keys offline and signs transactions. It can be safely used on a malware infected computer.

Costs $99 for one, or $276 for three. You can buy with bitcoin from TREZOR’s website. To buy with a credit card or bank account you’ll have to buy from Amazon.

Make sure you NEVER buy a TREZOR or any other hardware wallet from eBay.

Only buy from the TREZOR store or from Amazon.

Here is the TREZOR compared to the other three popular hardware wallets:

TREZOR provides top-notch security for bitcoin, protecting against both physical and virtual theft.

TREZOR is an HD wallet where you control the private keys, so an entire wallet can be backed up with the 24 words generated on setup. The original 24-word seed is generated using RNG from the device and the computer. The seed is generated offline and displayed on the TREZOR’s screen, which ensures that the seed is never on an internet-connected device.

A PIN code is required on setup, and required for spending. After each incorrect guess the wait between guesses is raised by a power of two. Making 30 guesses would take 17 years.

You can add a passphrase to the 24-word seed for extra security, which acts as a 25th word. You must remember the passphrase because the seed without the passphrase is not enough to recover the wallet. A passphrase offers more security, but if forgotten the wallet cannot be recovered.

You can recover the entire wallet with the 24-word seed and passphrase if used, in the event that your TREZOR is lost or damaged. Recovery can be done with another TREZOR or with other wallets, like Electrum or Mycelium.

TREZOR’s screen allows you to confirm that you’re sending to the intended recipient, but this does not prevent against phishing attacks.

TREZOR’s buttons (as shown above) also make sure that a hacker couldn’t automatically send a transaction from your device. The button must be physically pressed in order to confirm each outgoing transaction.

Setup and Initialization

There are three ways to setup your TREZOR: via myTREZOR.com, the Chrome extension, and via the command line. Setup involves setting the PIN code, device name and password.

myTREZOR.com is TREZOR’s web wallet, while the Chrome extension is an app installed to your browser. The setup process on both is the same. The one difference is that setup in myTREZOR.com is online, while the Chrome extension can be used offline. If you care about your privacy, use the Chrome extension and setup offline.

Backup Seed

As mentioned earlier, you backup your TREZOR by writing down 24 words. These 24 words can then recreate your TREZOR wallet in the event your TREZOR is lost, stolen or damaged.

The TREZOR comes with paper to write down the words:

For the extra paranoid user, you may want to store your seed in a fireproof safe. Or, get something like the Billfodl.

The Billfodl is stainless steel backup solution. It allows you to store your 24 word backup seed on material that is much more resistant to fire, electricity, water and other potential dangers to your backup seed.

For example, one user had $1 million worth of cryptocurrency backed up on a seed. His house was flooded, and the water destroyed his paper backup seed. This would not have happened had the user been storing his backup seed on stainless steel like the Billfodl.

The Billfodl protects your seed from both fire and potential floods. For $80, this can be worth it depending on the amount of cryptocurrency you’re storing on your device.

TREZOR itself offers very good privacy. Satoshi Labs has no way of tracking your actions after you receive the device because it has no serial number. All of the software is open source. No usernames or passwords are needed when using TREZOR.

Privacy is determined by the wallet used with TREZOR: Electrum, MultiBit HD, and GreenAddress on desktop, GreenBits and Mycelium on Android, and myTREZOR.com on the web.

Data can be leaked upon setup if using TREZOR’s myWallet. For a more private initialization, use the Chrome extension or the python tools to setup your device on an offline computer.

Software Wallets

Trezor is compatible with a number of wallets, including Electrum, MultiBit HD, and GreenAddress on desktop, GreenBits and Mycelium on Android, and myTREZOR.com on the web. Use the TREZOR Chrome extension to manage your device.

TREZOR vs. Ledger Nano S

TREZOR and the Ledger Nano S are often compared.

The main difference is that TREZOR is more like a mini computer, while the Ledger Nano S uses a secure chip.

TREZOR vs. KeepKey

KeepKey is actually a port of the TREZOR’s code and firmware.

Until recently, the main difference was that KeepKey offers a digital screen and the ability to recover the seed without worrying about keyloggers. But, recently TREZOR added the ability to do a secure recovery.

So now the main difference in the KeepKey vs TREZOR showdown is that the TREZOR is made from plastic, while the KeepKey is aluminum.

The KeepKey feels more like a premium device, although the TREZOR is probably more secure against drops since it’s much lighter.

How to Use TREZOR with Mycelium

This article details how to use a previously initialized TREZOR with Mycelium. Your TREZOR must be setup before use with Mycelium. To learn how to RESTORE your TREZOR using Mycelium, click here.

First, make sure you have the latest version of Mycelium installed on your Android device. Open Mycelium and select “new account”. If you already have Mycelium installed then skip this step.

Swipe right to move over to the “Accounts” tab. Click the key on the top right to add a new account.

Under “Import a Trezor-HD account” tap “Trezor”.

Plug in an OTG cable to your Android device and plug in your TREZOR to the OTG cable.

Enter your TREZOR pin code. The numbers will be displayed on your TREZOR’s screen.

Enter your TREZOR passphrase if you have one. Any passphrase will create a valid wallet. If your wallet shows a zero balance, restart the process and double check that the passphrase was entered correctly.

Mycelium will scan for accounts on your TREZOR.

In this case we have one account based on the passphease entered. Click on an account to load that account, or tap “Import next unused account” to add a new account.

Name your TREZOR account. This is how it will be displayed in the Mycelium app.

You can now send payments from your TREZOR with Mycelium.

Even if the TREZOR is removed after use, the wallet and its addresses will still be viewable in watch-only mode. This way you can still view your balance, generate new addresses, and receive payments.

Restore with Mycelium

If your TREZOR has been lost or stolen, your funds can still be accessed by importing the recovery seed and passphrase (if used) into Mycelium for Android.

A fresh install of Mycelium is required. If you already use Mycelium, write down the 12-word backup seed and reinstall the application.

When opening Mycelium, you’ll be given two options: Restore Backup and Create New. Select Restore Backup.

Select the number of words contained in your seed, and check I have a password if you used a passphrase:

1. In myTrezor, click on "Account #1" on the left of the screen and you will see an empty Transactions tab.

2. Select the "Receive" tab to get your first Trezor bitcoin address (a long string of numbers and letters).

  • If you are transferring bitcoins from a mobile wallet, scan the QR code shown next to the address.

3. When someone makes a payment to you, you will see a green (incoming) transaction appear in the transactions pane.

  • At first, the transaction will be marked as "unconfirmed".
  • Transactions can take up to 15 minutes to go through completely.
  • When they do so, you will see the "unconfirmed" text replaced by the date and time of the transaction's completion

Making payments with Trezor

1. Go to the account page in myTrezor and press send. You'll be taken to a payment page like this:

2. Enter the destination bitcoin address.

  • You can type in a destination address for your transaction and the amount you're sending.
  • You can scan a QR code connected with the recipient's wallet using myTrezor by pressing the scan QR code button in the address field and holding a picture of the QR code up to your computer's webcam.

3. You can send bitcoins to multiple addresses with one transaction by pressing the '+' button in the right hand corner of the Send page.

  • You can also choose to add multiple transactions by clicking on the "Import from CSV" button.

5. Confirm the transaction on your Trezor

  • If the amount and the payment address are correct, press the right button on your Trezor to confirm. If they are wrong, press 'cancel'.
  • Once you have confirmed the destination address(es) and amount(s) of your bitcoin transaction, your Trezor will display the total amount of the transaction along with the transaction fee. Make sure these are reasonable before pressing confirm.

Use the buttons to confirm or cancel a transaction.

6. You can watch the progress of your outgoing transactions by switching over to the Transactions window.

We Tested the New TREZOR Cryptocurrency Wallet: This Is What We Found

The new TREZOR model T, a hardware cryptocurrency wallet developed by SatoshiLabs , is the second generation of SatoshiLabs’ popular TREZOR hardware wallet family. The Model T was announced in November 2017, on the ninth anniversary of Satoshi Nakamoto’s Bitcoin white paper and made available for pre-order. All pre-order devices were sold out, and regular sales are expected to start soon.

Bitcoin Magazine has tested a TREZOR Model T. The matchbox-sized device comes in a sleek package with a USB-C cable for connecting to a computer or phone; stickers and other accessories; and a minimalist Post-it-sized “Getting Started” guide. An online guide titled “ Getting started with TREZOR Model T ” provides more detailed instructions with pictures.

The device is only powered when plugged in and connects to the blockchain via a web interface through the host computer. Contrary to previous TREZOR models with buttons, the Model T has a touchscreen. Other differences include a new version of the firmware, TREZOR Core, which has been written from scratch. The source code for TREZOR Core is available on Github, with other TREZOR software .

The new device also comes with a magnetic dock that can be affixed to any firm surface. The Model T can then be attached to the dock by means of magnets embedded in the device.

We plugged the device into a computer and followed the instructions in the online guide, which direct the user to open a supported browser and go to the TREZOR web interface. Once the firmware was correctly installed, we went on to create a new wallet.

The web interface gives step-by-step instructions, synchronized with instructions that appear on the device’s screen.

After generating a new wallet, the user should immediately follow the instructions to create a backup in the format of a personal recovery seed. The Model T generates a unique, 12-word long recovery seed, which is displayed on the device screen. The user should write down the seed words on a recovery card (there are two recovery cards in the box, in case one is lost). Then the device randomly selects two words and asks the user to retype them on the screen for verification.

The 12-word seed permits recovering the content of the wallet in case, for example, the device is damaged or lost, and it is the only way for the user to do so. Of course, malicious parties could do the same. Therefore, it’s very important to follow the recommendation: “Remember to keep your card with the seed words in a safe location and never store it as a digital copy. We strongly discourage you from taking photos of your recovery seed or to make any digital copies. Please do not write down the words into a text file on your computer, even if your computer is encrypted.”

The next step is naming the device and choosing a numeric pin code by using the touchscreen on the device. An essential security feature of this step (that some might find annoying) is that the layout of the numeric keypad on the touchscreen changes at each input.

Now, the TREZOR T is ready to be used by simply plugging it into a computer (if the computer doesn’t have the TREZOR Bridge software and driver installed, those must be installed first), authenticating with the pin code, and using the web interface. The web interface and the on-screen interface on the TREZOR T work smoothly in tandem, and, often (for example, when sending funds), the information entered via the web interface must be confirmed on the device.

Besides Bitcoin, the TREZOR T supports Bitcoin Cash, Bitcoin Gold, Dash, Litecoin, Zcash, Ethereum and Ethereum Classic; both versions of Ethereum are supported through a partnership with MyEtherWallet .

We tested the TREZOR T as a bitcoin wallet. First, we sent bitcoin from external wallets, in multiple transactions, to a new bitcoin address generated by the TREZOR T. Then, we sent bitcoin from the TREZOR T to external wallets. All transactions went through without problems and appeared in the transaction list in the web interface.

When the TREZOR T is unplugged, it powers down and disconnects from the internet. Therefore, the user’s funds stored on the device are safe and beyond reach of thieves, making this hardware wallet a secure, matchbox-sized, cryptocurrency “bank.” Of course, it’s important to store the device (and in particular the cards with the seed words) in a safe place — or even better, in separate locations.

In summary, the TREZOR T is useful and usable. Perhaps the initial set-up procedure is a bit complicated for users without a minimum of computer expertise, but most users of hardware cryptocurrency wallets are likely to be able to, for example, install drivers manually if needed by following the clear instructions in the user guide. After the initial set-up, the TREZOR Model T seems very easy to use, with an appealing UI and cool new features.
