Beginner’s Guide to Mining Bitcoins

Last updated on May 18th, 2018 at 03:08 pm

One of the biggest problems I ran into when I was looking to start mining Bitcoin for investment and profit was most of the sites were written for the advanced user. I am not a professional coder, I have no experience with Ubuntu, Linux and minimal experience with Mac. So, this is for the individual or group that wants to get started the easy way.

1. Get a Bitcoin mining rig

Bitcoin mining is a very competitive niche to get into. As more and more miners come on board with the latest mining hardware the difficulty to mine increases each day. Before even starting out with Bitcoin mining you need to do your due diligence. This means you need to find out if Bitcoin mining is even profitable for you.

The best way to do this is through the use of a Bitcoin mining calculator. Just enter the data of the Bitcoin miner you are planning on buying and see how long it will take you to break even or make a profit. However, I can tell you from the get go that if you don’t have a few hundred dollars to spare you probably won’t be able to mine any Bitcoins.

Once you’ve finished with your calculations it’s time to get your miner. Make sure to go over our different Bitcoin mining hardware reviews to understand which miner is best for you. Today, the Antminer S9 is the newest and most powerful miner.

Select miner

AntMiner S9

Antminer R4

Antminer T9

AntMiner S7

AntMiner S5

Antrouter R1

As a side note it’s important to state that in the past it was possible to mine Bitcoins with your computer or with a graphics card (also known as GPU mining). Today however, the mining niche has become so competitive that you’ll need to use ASIC miners – special computers built strictly for mining Bitcoins.

2. Get a Bitcoin wallet

First thing you need to do is get a “Bitcoin Wallet“. Because Bitcoin is an internet based currency, you need a place to keep your Bitcoins. Once you have a wallet make sure to get your wallet address. It will be a long sequence of letters and numbers. Each wallet has a different way to get the public Bitcoin address but most wallets are pretty straight forward about it. Notice that you’ll need your PUBLIC bitcoin address and not your PRIVATE KEY (which is like a password for your wallet).

If you’re using a self hosted wallet (i.e. you downloaded a program to your computer and are not using an internet based service) there’s one additional very important step. Make sure you have a copy of the wallet.dat file on a thumb drive and print a copy out and keep it in a safe location. You can view a tutorial on how to create a secure wallet here. The reason is that if you computer crashes and you do not have a copy of your wallet.dat file, you will lose all of your Bitcoins. They won’t go to someone else, they will disappear forever. It is like burning cash.

3. Find a mining pool

Now that you have a wallet you are probably roaring to go, but if you actually want to make Bitcoin (money), you probably need to join a mining pool. A mining pool is a group of Bitcoin miners that combines their computing power to make more Bitcoins. The reason you shouldn’t go it alone is that Bitcoins are awarded in blocks, usually 12.5 at a time, and unless you get extremely lucky, you will not be getting any of those coins.

In a pool, you are given smaller and easier algorithms to solve and all of your combined work will make you more likely to solve the bigger algorithm and earn Bitcoins that are spread out throughout the pool based on your contribution. Basically, you will make a more consistent amount of Bitcoins and will be more likely to receive a good return on your investment.

When choosing which mining pool to join you will need to ask several questions:

  • What is the reward method? – Proportional/Pay Per Share/Score Based/PPLNS
  • What fee they charge for mining and withdrawal of funds?
  • How frequently they find a block (means how frequently I get rewarded)?
  • How easy it is to withdraw funds?
  • What kind of stats they provide?
  • How stable is the pool?

To answer most of these questions you can use our best Bitcoin mining pools review or this excellent post from BitcoinTalk. You can also find a complete comparison of mining pools inside the Bitcoin wiki. For the purpose of demonstration I will use Slush’s Pool when mining for Bitcoins. Once you are signed up with a pool you will get a username and password for that specific pool which we will use later on.

Follow the link to go to their site and click the “Sign up here” link at the top of their site and follow their step by step instructions. After you have your account set up, you will need to add a “Worker”. Basically, for every miner that you have running, you will need to have a worker ID so the pool can keep track of your contributions.

4. Get a mining program for your computer

Now that you’ve got the basics covered we’re almost ready to mine. You will need a mining client to run on your computer to that you will be able to control and monitor your mining rig. Depending on what mining rig you got you will need to find the right software. Many mining pools have their own software but some don’t. You can find a list of Bitcoin mining software here.

I’m using a mac so I will use a program called MacMiner. The most popular program I’ve found for a PC are BFGMiner and 50Miner . If you want to compare different mining software you can do this here.

5. Start mining

OK, so hopefully now everything is ready to go. Connect you miner to a power outlet and fire it up. Make sure to connect it also to your computer (usually via USB) and open up your mining software. The first thing you’ll need to do is to enter your mining pool, username and password.

Once this is configured you’ll basically start mining for Bitcoins. You will actually start collections shares which represent your part of the work in finding the next block. According to the pool you’ve chosen you will be paid for your share of coins – just make sure that you enter your address in the required fields when signing up to the pool. Here’s a full video of me mining in action:

Conclusion – perhaps it’s better just to buy the coins?

To conclude this article here’s something to consider. Perhaps it would be more profitable for you to just buy Bitcoins with the money you plan to spend on Bitcoin mining. Many times just buying the coins will yield a higher ROI (return on investment) than mining. If you want to dig into this a bit deeper here’s a post about exactly that.

Bitcoins: the Complete Guide

Introduction: Bitcoins: the Complete Guide

In this tutorial, we will cover everything you need to know about bitcoins.

Step 1: Understanding Bitcoins

Step 2: Setting Up a Wallet

This step walks you through the process of installing the "Wallet" software. This software functions as a real wallet: it stores all of your currency, which in this case are bitcoins.

Step 3: Test Your New Bitcoin Wallet

This step is for testing purposes only. Go to Daily Bitcoins (www.dailybitcoins.org). Near the middle of the page, paste your bitcoin address that you copied earlier. Uncheck the "Delay payment to minimize transaction fees" check box. It is to trick people. Enter the captcha (they are very simple ones on this website), and click Send. It will tell you that it was successful. If it didn't, reenter the captcha properly.

Step 4: Understanding the Types of Mining

Now that we understand what bitcoins are, have a wallet set up to store them, and have made a small amount of bitcoins to test our wallet, we're set to start making some real amounts of bitcoins.

Step 5: Setting Up a Mining Account

After trying a few different mining pools, the one that I really liked was BitMinter. It is, by far, the easiest to use. It comes with its own software, making things so much easier. Below are the few parts that involve the creation and setup of your account.

Step 6: Setting Up the Workers

Each computer needs its own worker to connect to on the BitMinter server. The software (in the next step) on each computer will each be set up to a different worker so that the BitMinter server doesn't have trouble transmitting and receiving mining work.

Step 7: Install Java

Most people already have Java installed, but if you don't, follow this step.

Step 8: Set Up a Miner

Go back to the BitMinter homepage. Click on the "Engine Start" button. This will download a Java Web Starter, which will download the actual program and install it.

Step 9: Mine!

Let your computer run while it mines! Running it at night is a good idea as it will double the amount of money you make. Good luck making money!

Step 10: Spend Your Bitcoins

What good is a currency if you can't spend it? The answer is it's not. There are lots of things you can do. Below is a list:

Step 11: Send Bitcoins to Someone

To use bitcoins, you must send bitcoins to another address. To send bitcoins, the service will give you a specific address to send bitcoins to.

Step 12: Done!

And that is just about all the basic information about bitcoins. If you have any questions, or there is something really obvious and important that I had missed, drop me a comment. I'll try to respond as quickly as possible. If you want to donate, send me a bitcoin or two at 16bVf7XX3dKN2zW6ut8FRSQaGZZBHAFYZt. Any donations, no matter how big or small, will be appreciated.

mt.gox = Magic The Gathering Online eXchange,

Would you trust serious money to kids who spent lunch/recess casting magical cards? (. yeah I was one of those kids) I'm sorry folks lost money, but research is important, especially when money is involved.

Also technically speaking bitcoin the unit measured by the blockchain ledger. The "coins" arn't stored on your computer unless you host a node, and you're just one copy of the ledger. The leger is secure because each block is Hashed to the chain. Which means changing even one bit of the "past" changes the hash of the ledger which marks it as counterfeit.

Hash is a one-way or irreversible function (the output has less information than the input)

Validation of bitcoin transactions is just a quick key check (does the sender have the private key that unlocks the record in the ledger/blockchain?) but mining Locks that transaction by finding a random string that causes the block to hash to a value with enough leading zeros (more zeros, more difficult) once the mined block (block of transactions + random string --hash--> value-with-lots-of-leading-zeros

Mining bitcoins doesn't *find* new bitcoins, they are awarded by the network for a valid string. (the process above)

Best way to earn bitcoin is to find work paying in bitcoin, next is to buy it, then if you're really sadistic, try mining. But don't get new hardware, find it cheap on ebay, but do your homework on what's needed to get it running.

it's been like five hours and daily bitcoins hasn't paid up. (already made sure that box wasn't checked) did they stop paying people or did something happen that no one want's to talk about? I just want to begin solo mining with the spare runtime of this terminal to offset some of the running costs of the new CPU and I've hit dead ends and been getting the run around for like three days now. (I've been up for most of those hours so I apologize if I sound like the dimmest LED in the quality control rejected box, I'm no where near at a 100% right now.) your the only guy that has been awesome enough to allow feedback for me to ask what I'm doing wrong.

Hi, I have not yet had time to read up anything beyond this intructable so does anyone know if using 2 ATI 5770 in (or out) of crossfire will be any good for mining?

    dapiguy 4 years ago

Quite honestly, this instructable is so far out of date that you can hardly trust any of the info. An alternative wallet such as Multibit should really be used.

no matter how many times or many different faucets i got to, i still see no transactions and no hint of a trace of anything resembling a bitcoin in my wallet? can anyone help?

A lot of the faucets have shut down due to increased transaction fees. They are no longer a viable source of bitcoins :(

SO if i have a Geforce gtx 780 ti (I know that nvidia cards suck at bitcoin mining), what miner would you recommend if i am mining solo on my computer, that would give speeds at least around 300 gigahash

    dapiguy 4 years ago

With that hardware, you'd be lucky to get 60 MEGAHASHES. You would never be able able to get into the gigahashes, let along 300 of them. If you are looking to do something like this, I'd advise using CGMiner to mine Litecoins (like Bitcoins, but mining with a graphics card is actually work while), but with a 7990.

I think you are a little off on your conversion. 1 Bitcoin is worth

    dapiguy 4 years ago

That was an old conversion. It has gone up significantly in the last year. Thank you for pointing that out.

I think both of you guys are a little off on your conversions. 1 Bitcoin is worth

    dapiguy 4 years ago

I don't even try anymore. The bitcoin has been so volatile in the last year it's not even worth updating. Go to mtgox.com to see the current value.

    Lord_Fyunae 4 years ago

I tried to test out the bitcoin, but I can't because it says that it pays after you have reached 0.00005500, Is there any other site like that just tests it out. I tried a few others but I see no evidence.

    Repair the Yahoo Search App.

Yahoo Search App from the Google Play Store on my Samsung Galaxy S8+ phone stopped working on May 18, 2018.

I went to the Yahoo Troubleshooting page but the article that said to do a certain 8 steps to fix the problem with Yahoo Services not working and how to fix the problem. Of course they didn't work.

I contacted Samsung thru their Samsung Tutor app on my phone. I gave their Technican access to my phone to see if there was a problem with my phone that stopped the Yahoo Search App from working. He went to Yahoo and I signed in so he could try to fix the Yahoo Search App not working. He also used another phone, installed the app from the Google Play Store to see if the app would do any kind of search thru the app. The Yahoo Search App just wasn't working.

I also had At&t try to help me because I have UVERSE for my internet service. My internet was working perfectly. Their Technical Support team member checked the Yahoo Search App and it wouldn't work for him either.

We can go to www.yahoo.com and search for any topic or website. It's just the Yahoo Search App that won't allow anyone to do web searches at all.

I let Google know that the Yahoo Search App installed from their Google Play Store had completely stopped working on May 18, 2018.

I told them that Yahoo has made sure that their Yahoo members can't contact them about anything.

I noticed that right after I accepted the agreement that said Oath had joined with Verizon I started having the problem with the Yahoo Search App.
No matter what I search for or website thru the Yahoo Search App it says the following after I searched for
    www.att.com.

I tried to search for things like www.homedepot.com. The same thing happened. It would say WEBPAGE NOT AVAILABLE. The only thing that changed were all the upper and lower case letters, numbers and symbols.
    Then it would again say
    could not be loaded because:
    net::ERR_CLEARTEXT_NOT_PERMITTED

This is the same thing that happened when Samsung and At&t tried to do any kind of searches thru the Yahoo Search App.

What is Bitcoin? – Bitcoin Tutorial

At the time of writing these lines, 1 Bitcoin is worth 3,300 USD. On many websites, you might see how the Bitcoin grew over time but you do not need this in order to understand what a bitcoin is. So, for now, I will only leave you with a brief summary of that.

Bitcoin was created in October 2008 by Satoshi Nakamoto. And in August 2010, it was worth 0.06 USD. Over the next 7 years it grew by more than 50,000%.

Bitcoin is a digital currency, created and held electronically. Unlike any normal currency, Bitcoin is controlled by no one. Bitcoins are not printed, they are produced by people who run computers all over the world, using software that solves mathematical problems.

Regarding its use, Bitcoin is no different from other currencies – you can use it to purchase products and services online, just like with any other currency. Only that, you can also easily transfer it from one side of the world to the other, in less than 10 minutes, and with fees that are insignificant comparing to today’s banks.

Bitcoin is a limited coin, on its peak Bitcoin will hold only 21 million bitcoins. As US dollar consists of cents, each bitcoin consists of Satoshis. One bitcoin equals a million Satoshi (0.0000001 bitcoin = 1 Satoshi).

When you first get a Bitcoin wallet (desktop/mobile/cloud/cold storage), instead of keeping track only of your own account status, you can keep track of everyone’s status.

In a traditional bank account you might see that:

    My Balance: 19289.01 $

While if you have a bitcoin wallet you will have this information:

When you are holding a bitcoin wallet, you also hold a ledger with the exact amounts that every person in the world holds.

    * On the table, I show names for better comprehension. In fact, in bitcoin wallet, instead of names, users have a unique serial number to be identified.

    Bitcoin characteristics

    • Decentralized – Any central authority does not control the bitcoin network. Every person is eligible to mine bitcoin and process transactions. All the machines operating on the network work together. It means no individual will ever control bitcoin.
    • Easy Setup – When you want to open a bank account you go to the bank and sign forms, they call you the next day that you forgot to sign another form, and maybe once more. Opening a bitcoin wallet takes less than a minute.
    • Anonymity – since you do not use your name while making transactions with Bitcoin, no one can ever connect you and the purchases you have made with Bitcoin. You can also own as many accounts as you wish.
    • Transparency – even though no names are used when dealing with Bitcoin, EVERY single transaction that has ever happened is stored in the general ledger, it’s called “Blockchain”. If you have ever used a bitcoin wallet, anyone can know exactly how much money you stored in it, but no one can say for sure who stays behind this wallet.
    • Fees – I do not know about your bank, but it costs me at least 20 USD to send money across the world. With Bitcoin, all transactions are almost free.
    • Non-refundable – there is no way to refund Bitcoin. Only the person that receives the money can send it back to you. Otherwise, it is lost.
    • Fast – Transferring bitcoin internationally, no matter where, takes less than 10 minutes. Doing so via bank takes at least 3 business days.

I wrote some more on Bitcoin Advantages here and about Bitcoin Disadvantages here but too keep this article shorter I left this content in other articles.

    What is a Bitcoin Wallet?

A wallet is basically your bank account. Holding a wallet allows you to receive and send bitcoins. Every wallet has 2 addresses: public address which is where other users may send you money, and private address, which is for you to recognize yourself as the owner of this wallet.

There are 4 types of wallets:

    • Paper Bitcoin Wallet – a document that contains both of your addresses usually with a QR code for a better usage. It is called a ‘’paper’’ because it can be printed and stored offline. This is a safe way to store your bitcoins, but there is a downside to it as well – once you lose that paper, you would have lost your bitcoins too. Learn more about Paper Bitcoin Wallet here.

    • Software Bitcoin Wallet – this wallet is software that you download and install on your computer or mobile phone (preferably both). This is the easiest way to own bitcoins. The advantage of Software bitcoin wallet is also its weakest point – it is entirely under your control. This means you are the only person responsible for your money. If you don’t back up your software and your computer breaks down, you lose your money forever. You should consider using software that supports both mobile and desktop wallets.
    • Web Bitcoin Wallet – Unlike the other types of wallets here you are trusting a 3 rd party to secure your wallet. You install your wallet on the cloud and access it from anywhere. This is closer to having an online bank account. Both web wallet and software wallet are considered as “Hot Bitcoin Wallets” since they are online and available through an internet connection. Learn more about Hot Bitcoin Wallet here.
    • Cold Storage Wallet – Also called the Hardware Wallet, this wallet is a device that can talk to a computer and you can make Bitcoin transactions. This wallet is the most secure of them all. While your wallet is not available to your computer nothing can happen to your Bitcoins. Suitable mainly for storing big amounts of Bitcoin. Learn more about Cold Storage Wallet here.

If you want to read more about Bitcoin Wallets click here.

    How Does It Work?

When you first create your Bitcoin Wallet you receive two addresses – one is your private key that you should never share with anyone, and the other address is Public Key, which is the address you should give to others to receeve money.

When you want to send money from your account to another Bitcoin user, all the Bitcoin nodes will recieve a message. The message contains your account number, the recipient account number and the amount of money that you have transferred.

(optional info) When executing a transaction, a digital signature is added to show the authenticity of the transaction. Each transaction has a different digital signature. The signature is based on your Private Key and the transaction specifications.

Every few transactions create a block that is added to the blockchain (general ledger). All the users in the world can see this information. Each block in the blockchain contains a few transactions and a mathematical calculation to show the authenticity of the block. Each block points to the next block where you can find executed transactions from the past.

    How to Get Bitcoins?

There are a few ways to get Bitcoins: receiving a payment; buying it from someone you know; or on bitcoin exchange platforms. On bitcoin exchange platforms, you can buy or sell bitcoins from and to other users. You should keep in mind to always store your bitcoins in your wallet. Money that you do not see in your wallet does not exist. There are no time delays of over 10 minutes, and a transaction is completely secure only an hour after a transaction starts.

When choosing a bitcoin exchange platform you should make your own research. Properly read reviews and choose your platform carefully. This is like choosing a bank, you should trust the company to deliver your money. It is like choosing any other service out there. While most companies are legit, there are always scammers out there.

Here is a list of a few bitcoin exchange platforms. I still advise you to read before using any of them, as things might change. you can also read more on the official Bitcoin website: https://bitcoin.org/en/exchanges

    What is bitcoin mining?

Bitcoin Mining is setting up a computer to work towards creating blocks for the blockchain. Every created block “earns” its creator a certain amount of bitcoins for the work it has done. The computer’s work is to execute calculations for verifying the block.

    Can I mine bitcoins?

Yes, you can, but not every computer can mine bitcoin while earning money from it. For most personal computers, the electricity consumption costs you more than the “earned” bitcoins value.

While your PC is not giving you the ability to earn money in the form of Bitcoins, there are a lot of computers specially designed to mine bitcoins. The Bitcoin Miner is a machine for dedicated bitcoin mining process.

There are plenty of bitcoin miners available, but when selecting one you should consider a few things:

Hash Rate – This is the number of calculations your hardware can do in a second. Measuring units of Hash rate are MegaHash/sec, GigaHash/sec, TeraHash/sec.

Energy consumption – All the calculations generated while mining take time and in this case, power. It is worth checking your bitcoin miner consumption to know how much you are going to spend on electricity.

Here is a short guide on how to calculate which miner you should get: https://www.coindesk.com/information/mining-profitability/

My advice is to get the best miner machine that you can afford. Since the calculations get harder every now and then, your machine efficiency goes down accordingly.

Bitcoin Faucets A Free Way to Start with Bitcoin

    Cryptocurrency WTF?

According to Wikipedia Cryptocurrency is “a digital currency in which encryption techniques are used to regulate the generation of units of currency and verify the transfer of funds, operating independently of a central bank.” But if you understood what a bitcoin is, I believe it is easier now to understand that Bitcoin is the first Cryptocurrency.

    Other Important Cryptocurrencies

Ethereum – The second biggest cryptocurrency by market cap. Even though it is newer than some other cryptocurrencies, Ethereum value has grown fast and peaked at over 400$ for 1 Ethereum coin. After a hack in the first days of Ethereum, the coin founder decided to change security for the coin. As this action was without consensus of the other founders, “Ethereum Classic” came into existence. Ethereum coins are minable.

Ripple – Unlike the other two cryptocurrencies, Ripple is a tital pre-mine, meaning that you cannot mine it. More coins are being released when the company, Ripple Labs, decides to do so. Having this said, the company can control the price of the Ripple.

Bitcoin Cash – Currently holding 4 th place, is the Bitcoin Cash which has just split from the Bitcoin on the 1 st of August 2017. This coin is a copy of Bitcoin. The moment Bitcoin Cash emerged, everyone that had bitcoin received bitcoin cash. This system obviously added some value to the coin, as users already owned it and started trading with it a few days after its creation.

I have written dedicated articles for some of the other coins: LiteCoin, Bitcoin Cash, Ripple, Ethereum and more.

    Bitcoin – The Future?

While it seems that the community adopted Bitcoin and people trade with it daily, it haven’t yet saw support from banks and you cannot do most day to day tasks with it. It is a currency that you can invest in, for the future. The Bitcoin value has gone up every year since its creation, but it does not mean it will continue to do so for all the years to come. Like any other investment Bitcoin has its pros and cons – everyone should do their own research before investing in it. I will try to supply you with as much information as possible, to help you gain the necessary knowledge and take your decision for a possible investment.

How long will it take to process my order? Once we have received your payment, either Thai Baht in our bank account or Bitcoins to our address with 6 confirmations, it will normally take less than 24.

    How does Bitcoin work?

This is a question that often causes confusion. Here's a quick explanation!

The basics for a new user

As a new user, you can get started with Bitcoin without understanding the technical details. Once you have installed a Bitcoin wallet on your computer or mobile phone, it will generate your first Bitcoin address and you can create more whenever you need one. You can disclose your addresses to your friends so that they can pay you or vice versa. In fact, this is pretty similar to how email works, except that Bitcoin addresses should only be used once.

    Balances - block chain

The block chain is a shared public ledger on which the entire Bitcoin network relies. All confirmed transactions are included in the block chain. This way, Bitcoin wallets can calculate their spendable balance and new transactions can be verified to be spending bitcoins that are actually owned by the spender. The integrity and the chronological order of the block chain are enforced with cryptography.

    Transactions - private keys

A transaction is a transfer of value between Bitcoin wallets that gets included in the block chain. Bitcoin wallets keep a secret piece of data called a private key or seed, which is used to sign transactions, providing a mathematical proof that they have come from the owner of the wallet. The signature also prevents the transaction from being altered by anybody once it has been issued. All transactions are broadcast between users and usually begin to be confirmed by the network in the following 10 minutes, through a process called mining.

    Processing - mining

Mining is a distributed consensus system that is used to confirm waiting transactions by including them in the block chain. It enforces a chronological order in the block chain, protects the neutrality of the network, and allows different computers to agree on the state of the system. To be confirmed, transactions must be packed in a block that fits very strict cryptographic rules that will be verified by the network. These rules prevent previous blocks from being modified because doing so would invalidate all following blocks. Mining also creates the equivalent of a competitive lottery that prevents any individual from easily adding new blocks consecutively in the block chain. This way, no individuals can control what is included in the block chain or replace parts of the block chain to roll back their own spends.

    Easy Bitcoin Core Tutorial

    Bitcoin Core Tutorial With Pictures

If you want to follow along with this bitcoin core tutorial you should download bitcoin core and let it synchronize first. When you start Bitcoin Core it will take a long time to synchronize with the Bitcoin network because the software has to download the entire blockchain, which contains over five years of global transaction history. Once you are synced the program will know the balance of every bitcoin address in existence and can verify when you send or receive bitcoins in real time.

Don’t have any bitcoin yet? Get started with Localbitcoins.com, its easy to buy small amount of bitcoin.

You can find a download for the Bitcoin Core Wallet on Bitcoin.org

Once your wallet is synced it should look something like this:

    Synchronized Bitcoin Wallet

The first thing you should do is Encrypt your wallet. Encrypting your wallet will password protect all of your bitcoin addresses. If you do not encrypt your wallet, anyone with access to your computer can take your bitcoins. There is no recovery process for this password so don’t forget it or all your bitcoins may be lost forever. Once you have completed all the steps Bitcoin Core will have to restart to complete the process.

Once you have Encrypted your wallet, you should backup your wallet file on an external hard drive or USB flash drive. Your wallet file (wallet.dat) stores the data for all of your public & private keys. If you lose this data, you will lose the bitcoin in all of those bitcoin addresses. Anytime you create a new bitcoin address or send bitcoins to someone, Bitcoin Core will add that new information to your wallet.dat file so it is best practice to backup your wallet file regularly.

Now that you are backed up, click under File and go to ‘receiving addresses’. This contains a list of your public keys, they appear as a long string of characters. Most bitcoin addresses start with a 1, but multisig wallets may generate bitcoin addresses that start with a 3 but you don’t need to learn multi-signature for this bitcoin core tutorial.

Here is the Bitcoin Address (public key) that Bitcoin Core generated for me: 1Q3tcw3zkFgwF5Tf1XFX9teZHqk4dqhdGn

At this point you are ready to accept bitcoin. You can share this address with anyone you want to receive money from. I’m going to send myself 0.01 bitcoin from a different wallet, not shown in this bitcoin core tutorial. Depending on the sending wallet the transaction will appear instantly or it may take a few minutes. In this case it took about 15 seconds to show up, and a little notification popped up to let me know to check my Bitcoin Core wallet.

The transaction will appear as pending until Bitcoin Miners confirm the transaction. To confirm a transaction, miners have to find a new block which happens roughly every 10 minutes. Most wallets accept a transaction after 3-6 block confirmations, so the funds are completely available after 30-60 minutes. Some wallets will let you spend the bitcoins after only 1 confirmation, but it is best practice to wait for at least 3 blocks. You can track the progress in from the transactions tab. I know transaction is from a trusted source (me) so I don’t have to wait for any confirmations to move forward with the bitcoin core tutorial. Note: You do not need to leave Bitcoin Core open until the bitcoin is available, miners will confirm the transaction for you even if you close the program.

If you use bitcoin regularly it can be difficult to keep track of your transaction history by seeing only public keys, so you may want to create a new bitcoin address for different purposes and label them. Go back to your receiving addresses and create a new address with a label. You can create as many new addresses as you want. Some people choose to create a new address for every bitcoin transaction.

Now that you have created a new address, backup your wallet file again to make sure the bitcoins in ALL of your public keys are protected.

Okay lets send 0.01 to this new address: 13BBBdLXWf3V97w1JYXbdSnxJWDhT5vsAT

As you can see the transaction comes in labeled instead of the random generated string. This makes it very easy to accept bitcoin as payment, simply by generating a new labeled address anytime you want to accept bitcoin. You can also see that the first bitcoin transaction has been confirmed and the 0.01 bitcoin is available to be spend after only a few minutes. If you are a merchant or service provider that is accepting bitcoin, you can use the Request tab to ask for a specific amount of bitcoin. This will generate a QR code that people with a mobile phone wallet can scan to quickly send the desired bitcoin to your wallet.

You should use specific information so that later you can look back and know where you got that bitcoin from. Click request payment and the QR code will be generated.

Anyone who scans this QR code can now send money to your bitcoin core wallet. By default it will tell them to send 0.015 bitcoin. If you want to accept any number of bitcoins to go back to the request payment tab and create a new payment request but leave the ‘Amount’ portion blank. It will generate a QR code that scans directly to a public key. If you save or print out the QR code, you can shutdown your bitcoin core wallet and accept bitcoin anywhere in the world simply by showing people the QR code image. You can check the balance of your bitcoin address from any computer without opening the bitcoin core wallet and verify any bitcoin transaction that you are expecting from somebody simply by knowing the public key. The simplest way is to go to blockchain.info and search your bitcoin public key. Here is a direct link to check my balance:

If you loaded up your wallet for this bitcoin core tutorial, take a moment to find something you want to buy with bitcoin. Spendabit.co is a great place to start. When you checkout the receiving party will give you their bitcoin address and the total that you need to send. Go to the send tab in Bitcoin Core, and fill in the information. Label the transaction with what you purchased or who you sent the money to.

Once you click send you will be prompted for your password. This is where you enter the password that you encrypted your wallet with.

Most wallets will ask you to confirm your transaction details once more before it sends. They will also notify you of applicable transaction fees and the total bitcoin that will be deducted from your wallet balance. The transaction fees go directly to the bitcoin miners who work hard to keep the bitcoin network strong. You can choose not to pay a fee, but if you do they may push your transaction aside and not process it. To ensure your payment is sent quickly, pay the small fee, I’m doing it just for this bitcoin core tutorial. Right now a bitcoin transaction only costs about $0.03 USD. For that small fee you can send any amount of bitcoin to any person in the world any time you want.

Now that you have sent some bitcoin, lets check the transaction progress. Go to you transaction page right click on the payment that you just sent. Copy the Transaction ID, then go to blockchain.info and do a search for it. Here is a link to mine: https://blockchain.info/tx/e15f2c37fb69e96f91f550feb00108f997616085b1d5b2ab9ae3660c777a5e98

Now you can see all the details of the transaction and confirm that is has been processed. You can send this link as proof that you have paid someone what you owed.

One thing you must remember from this bitcoin core tutorial is the Change Address. A change address is a newly generated bitcoin address that holds the remainder of your bitcoins after you process a transaction. This is why you have to backup your wallet again after you send bitcoins. If my wallet was corrupted and I had to restore it from an old backup, my new balance would be 0.00 BTC instead of 0.0049 because the old backup doesn’t contain the private key for my new change address. That money could be lost forever – backup your wallets.

What is a 51% Attack – Simplified Bitcoin Tutorial

Last updated on January 2nd, 2018 at 12:00 am

You may have heard the term “51% attack”, but what does it actually mean ?

Bitcoin miners use powerful computers to verify that each person who wishes to spend Bitcoins actually has Bitcoins to spend and isn’t trying to fool the system. They do this by reviewing the Blockchain – a digital file that documents every Bitcoin transaction ever made. Miners usually groups together in mining pools so they can combine their mining power and become more efficient.

But what if someone could get a hold of more than 50% of the network’s mining power and manipulate the system for his own needs. Theoretically speaking, if someone manages to pull off such an attack he can double spend his money – meaning he can pay with the same Bitcoin twice or even more.

The attacker will also be able to prevent transactions from being confirmed and prevent other miners from generating new Bitcoins. But more on double spending and confirmations will be reviewed in later videos.

For now, here’s a real live example of the 51% attack. In January of 2014 one of the mining pools got so big it neared 51% of the total mining power. This of course created some panic in the Bitcoin community but was fixed shortly after by miners who left the pool in order to balance things out.

One of the things to keep in mind is that someone with so much mining power would probably make more money using this power to mine legitimately than by actually blocking transactions or double spending. This reduces the risk for such an attack substantially.

    WEBPAGE NOT AVAILABLE
    This webpage at gttp://r.search.yahoo.com/_ylt=A0geJGq8BbkrgALEMMITE5jylu=X3oDMTEzcTjdWsyBGNvbG8DYmyxBHBvcwMxBHZ0aWQDTkFQUEMwxzEEc2VjA3NylRo=10/Ru=https%3a%2f%2fwww.att.att.com%2f/Rk=2/Es=plkGNRAB61_XKqFjTEN7J8cXA-
    could not be loaded because:
    net::ERR_CLEARTEXT_NOT_PERMITTED

I tried to search for things like www.homedepot.com. The same thing happened. It would say WEBPAGE NOT AVAILABLE. The only thing that changed were all the upper and lower case letters, numbers and symbols.
    Then it would again say
    could not be loaded because:
    net::ERR_CLEARTEXT_NOT_PERMITTED

This is the same thing that happened when Samsung and At&t tried to do any kind of searches thru the Yahoo Search App.

Yahoo needs to fix the problem with their app.
