At first, miners used their central processing unit (CPU) to mine, but soon this wasn't fast enough and it bogged down the system resources of the host computer. Miners quickly moved on to using the graphical processing unit (GPU) in computer graphics cards because they were able to hash data 50 to 100 times faster and consumed much less power per unit of work.
During the winter of 2011, a new industry sprang up with custom equipment that pushed the performance standards even higher. Bitcoin mining is difficult to do profitably but if you try then this Bitcoin miner is probably a good shot.
ASIC Bitcoin Mining Hardware
Application-specific integrated circuit chips (ASICs) are bitcoin mining hardware created solely to solve Bitcoin blocks. They have only minimal requirements for other normal computer applications. Are you thinking of joining the Bitcoin mining universe? In case you don’t know, you can either mine on your own or as part of a pool. In terms of profit, there aren’t really many differences: solo mining will give you large and irregular payouts, as pooled mining will result in small and frequent payouts. In the end, they both add up to the same amount.
Whatever your choice might be, remember you need to follow certain steps to successfully mine Bitcoins:
- Get the right Bitcoin mining hardware. Today only ASIC miners are a viable option for mining Bitcoin.
- Get the best software that matches your needs
- Arrange a way to receive the profits of mining
- Start solving algorithms.
This is where you stop and think: but what is the best software for me if I don’t even know them all? Well, let’s make a small list of the most used software and help you choose.
IMPORTANT – Software that doesn’t support ASIC mining should be ignored for mininig Bitcoin as you can only profit today if you use an ASIC miner.

This software is, currently, the most popular GPU/FPGA/ASIC miner. CGminer is an open source GPU miner written in C available for several platforms like Windows, Linux and OS X. One of the things that make it extremely popular is the fact that it’s based on the original code Cpu Miner, which you can discover in Bitcoin Wiki.
This software includes overclocking, monitoring, fans peed control and remote interface capabilities. His other features include self detection of new blocks with a mini-database, binary loading of kernels, multi GPU support and CPU mining support. 2. BFGminer

This software is a derivative of the previous CGminer, designed specifically for FPGA and ASICs, but without the central focus on GPUs like CGminer. The latest update on BFGminer, the 3.1.1 version launched in April 2012, features dynamic clocking, monitoring and remote interface capabilities.
Besides being a super versatile program, BFGminer has really interesting features: vector support, integrated overclocking and fan control, ADL device reordering by PCI bus ID, support for mining with free Mesa/LLVM OpenCL and for getblocktemplate decentralized mining protocol and also crypt mining support for both CPU and OpenCL (GPU).
A little reminder: if you’re mining with a ModMiner, X6500 or ZTEX devices, you need to download bitstreams to make sure BFGMiner 3+ works with your device. You can find them in the official BFGminer forum and check BFGminer’s official website here.
3. BitMinter

We can say that, although BitMinter might not be the most popular mining software, it’s certainly one of the best when it comes to connect with users and potential “clients”. The software’s official website is quite complete and straightforward: for the creators of the program, it’s all about making Bitcoin mining “easy” and winning “high payouts”.
BitMinter is different because it’s a software that belongs to a mining pool, so your initial step is to register and fill in the pool sign-up form. So, it’s a great option if you’re looking for a simple installation.
Besides being available for operative systems like Windows, Linux and Mac OS X, BitMinter assures a good mining speed and long polling in order to reduce stale work. It also allows you to mine on OpenCL-compatible GPUs or ASICs/FPGAs (BFL, Block Erupter and other Icarus-compatible). The official BitMinter forum can be found here.
4. BTCMiner

This open source Bitcoin mining software for ZTEX USB-FPGA Modules 1.15 runs on the operative systems Linux and Windows. Yet, Windows users need to install the libusb driver first, which you can find here. The FPGA boards supported by BTCMiner (USB-FPGA Modules 1.15b and 1.15d, USB-FPGA Modules 1.15x and USB-FPGA Modules 1.15y.) have a USB interface, which can be used for communication and programming, allowing the user to build low cost FPGA clusters with standard components (like USB hubs, for instance). In practical terms, this means no JTAG programmer is required and the program allows to run large mining rigs from just one software instance.
The software features a ready-to-use Bitstream, which doesn’t require any Xilinx Software or a license, so this is an advantage. However, its dynamic frequency scaling is based on error measurement: so, BTCMiner automatically chooses the frequency with the highest rate of valid hashes. After presenting you these different software miners and its characteristics, it’s safe to say one thing: more important than rating them and placing them on a podium, you need to know them to correctly choose the one that’s better for your needs and already available hardware. Bitcoin Mining Pools
Now that you have Bitcoin mining hardware, your next step is to join a Bitcoin mining pool.
What is a Mining Pool?
Mining pools are groups of cooperating miners who agree to share block rewards in proportion to their contributed mining hash power.
While mining pools are desirable to the average miner as they smooth out rewards and make them more predictable, they unfortunately concentrate power to the mining pool’s owner.
Miners can, however, choose to redirect their hashing power to a different mining pool at anytime.
Pool Concentration in China
Before we get into the best mining pools to join, it’s important to note that most mining pools are in China. Many only have Chinese websites and support. Mining centralization in China is one of Bitcoin’s biggest issues at the moment.
There are about 20 major mining pools. Broken down by the percent of hash power controlled by a pool, and the location of that pool’s company, we estimate that Chinese pools control

The Biggest Mining Pools
The list below details the biggest Bitcoin mining pools. This is based on info from Blockchain’s pool share chart:

We strongly recommend new miners to join Slush Pool despite it not being one of the biggest pools. It was the first Bitcoin mining pool and remains one of the most reliable and trusted pools, especially for beginners.
BTC.com is a public mining pool that can be joined. However, we strongly recommend joining Slush Pool instead.
Antpool is a mining pool based in China and owned by BitMain. Antpool mines about 25% of all blocks.
ViaBTC is a somewhat new mining pool that has been around for about one year. It’s targeted towards Chinese miners.
Slush was the first mining pool and currently mines about 3% of all blocks.
Slush is probably one of the best and most popular mining pools despite not being one of the largest.
DiscusFish, also known as F2Pool, is based in China. F2Pool has mined about 5-6% of all blocks over the past six months.
BTC.top is a private pool and cannot be joined.
7. Bitclub.Network
Bitclub Network is a large mining pool but appears to be somewhat shady. We recommend staying away from this pool.
BTCC is a pool and also China’s third largest Bitcoin exchange. Its mining pool currently mines about 7% of all blocks.
Bitfury is a private pool that cannot be joined. Bitfury currently mines about 2% of all blocks.
10. BW Pool
BW, established in 2014, is another mining company based in China. It currently mines about 2% of all blocks.
Bitcoin Mining Pool Comparison
The comparison chart above is just a quick reference. The location of a pool does not matter all that much. Most of the pools have servers in every country so even if the mining pool is based in China, you could connect to a server in the US, for example.

Mining Pools vs Cloud Mining
Many people read about mining pools and think it is just a group that pays out free bitcoins. This is not true! Mining pools are for people who have mining hardware to split profits.
Many people get mining pools confused with cloud mining. Cloud mining is where you pay a service provider to miner for you and you get the rewards.

If you just want bitcoins, mining is NOT the best way to obtain coins.

Which Countries Mine the most Bitcoins?
Bitcoin mining tends to gravitate towards countries with cheap electricity.
As Bitcoin mining is somewhat centralized, 10-15 mining companies have claimed the vast majority of network hash power.
With many of these companies in the same country, only a number of countries mine and export a significant amount of bitcoins.
China mines the most bitcoins and therefore ends up “exporting” the most bitcoins.
Electricity in China is very cheap and has allowed Chinese Bitcoin miners to gain a very large percentage of Bitcoin’s hash power.
It’s rumored that some Chinese power companies point their excess energy towards Bitcoin mining facilities so that no energy goes to waste.
China is home to many of the top Bitcoin mining companies:
It’s estimated that these mining pools own somewhere around 60% of Bitcoins hash power, meaning they mine about 60% of all new bitcoins.
Georgia is home to BitFury, one of the largest producers of Bitcoin mining hardware and chips. BitFury currently mines about 15% of all bitcoins.
Sweden is home to KnCMiner, a Bitcoin mining company based in Stockholm. KnCMiner currently mines about 7.5% of all bitcoins.
The US is home to 21 Inc., a Bitcoin mining company based in California.
21 runs a large amount of miners, but also sells low powered bitcoin miners as part of their 21 Bitcoin computer.
Most of the hash power from the 21 Bitcoin computers is pointed towards 21’s mining pool. 21 Inc. mines about 3% of all bitcoins.
Other Countries
The countries above mine about 80% of all bitcoins.
The rest of the hash power is spread across the rest of the world, often pointed at smaller mining pools like Slush (Czech Republic) and Eligius (US).
A Note on Pools
While we can see which mining pools are the largest, it’s important to understand that the hash power pointed towards a mining pool isn’t necessarily owned by the mining pool itself.
There are a few cases, like with BitFury and KnCMiner, where the company itself runs the mining operation but doesn’t run a mining pool.
Bitcoin miners can switch mining pools easily by routing their hash power to a different pool, so the market share of pools is constantly changing.
To make the list of top 10 miners, we looked at blocks found over the past 6 months using data from BlockTrail.
The size of mining pools is constantly changing. We will do our best to keep this posted up-to-date.
If you cloud mine then you don’t need to select a pool; the cloud mining company does this automatically.
Why are Miners Important?
Bitcoin miners are crucial to Bitcoin and its security. Without miners, Bitcoin would be vulnerable and easy to attack.
Most Bitcoin users don’t mine.
However, miners are responsible for the creation of all new bitcoins and a fascinating part of the Bitcoin ecosystem.
Mining, once done on the average home computer, is now mostly done in large, specialized warehouses with massive amounts of mining hardware.
These warehouses usually direct their hashing power towards mining pools.
Antpool Review
Despite recent controversy, Antpool remains the largest Bitcoin mining pool in terms of its Bitcoin network hash rate. Antpool holds roughly 15% of the total hash rate of all Bitcoin mining pools.

About Antpool
Antpool mined its first block in March 2014, meaning that it emerged roughly four years after the first mining pool; Slushpool.
Antpool is run by Bitmain Technologies Ltd., the world’s largest Bitcoin mining hardware manufacturer, and a large portion of their pool is run on Bitmain’s own mining rigs.
Antpool supports p2pool and stratum mining modes with nodes that are spread all over the world to ensure stability (US, Germany, China etc.).
Also, Antpool’s user interface is surprisingly slick considering that the underlying company thrives mostly off of hardware sales.
How to Join Antpool
The pool is free to join and the process is simple.
First, you need to acquire Bitcoin mining hardware. Then you need to download mining software. If you need help deciding, I suggest you take a look at our hardware and software guides.
Hardware is important because it determines the size of your contribution to the pool’s hash rate. Software is important because it enables you to direct your hardware’s hash power towards the pool you prefer. So make sure to make the right choice in order to optimize your rewards.

What are Antpool’s Fees?
Antpool claims that it does not charge any fees for using its pool. Although there is some truth to this claim, it is not 100% correct.
While Antpool does not directly charge fees, it also does not disclose the Bitcoin transaction fees that are collected. Basically, clients are left in the dark. Currently, every Bitcoin block has a 12.5 BTC reward which Antpool does share with you when it finds a block.
Lately, however, Bitcoin transaction fees have been rising and an additional 1-2 bitcoins are collected per block by pools. At this time, Antpool keeps 1-2 bitcoins form transaction fees for itself, which are not shared with miners who have hash power pointed toward the pool.
It can be argued that these rates prevent the service from being usable for small-time and big-volume users. Consequently, some users on bitcointalk.org heed that the undisclosed fees make the service unwise to use for the time being.
What is the Payout Threshold?
The pool does not appear to have a payout threshold and pays out every day around 10 AM UTC.
The minimum withdrawal amount is 0.0005 BTC (other sources say 0.001 BTC).
Can you do Solo Mining on Antpool?
Solo mining means you mine for bitcoins without joining a pool. So if you use Antpool you are not solo mining by default.
Generally, you will receive more frequent payouts by joining a pool.
What is the Controversy around Antpool?
Antpool has refused to enable arguably beneficial upgrades to Bitcoin for reasons based on claims that have been largely disproved. Notably, this has taken place with somewhat of a vindictive attitude.
More specifically, the controversy revolves around Segwit – a feature that requires miner activation to be enabled. Despite the fact that most Bitcoin users want this feature activated, Antpool, among other pools, appears to be blocking this feature.
Antpool began signaling for Bitcoin Unlimited in early March 2017 for reasons that have not been elucidated by Bitmain CEO (and cofounder Jihan Wu).
Antpool claims that it will only signal for Segwit if there is a hardfork, which is a proposition that most users oppose. Furthermore, allegations that the owner refuses to sell hardware to Segwit supporters have also begun to circulate.
By using Antpool, you allow the pool to decide your hardware’s approach to these matters, meaning that the pool that you used dictates the type of Bitcoin protocol that your hardware employs. If you wish to decide which implementation your hardware should signal for, you can use a pool that leaves the choice to its users, like the Slush mining pool.
Bitfury Information
According to BlockTrail, Bitfury is the third largest Bitcoin mining pool and mines about 11% of all blocks.
The main difference between the Bitfury pool and other mining pools is that Bitfury is a private pool.
Bitfury, the company, makes its own mining hardware and runs its own pool. So, unlike Slush or Antpool, Bitfury cannot be joined if you run mining hardware at home.

BTCC Mining Pool is run by BTCC, a Bitcoin company based in China. The company also runs a Bitcoin exchange, wallet, prints physical bitcoins and more!

So even though BTCC is based in China, don’t be worried that you can’t use or join the pool:

Shared Transaction Fees
One great thing about BTCC pool is that it shares Bitcoin transaction fees with its miners.
In every Bitcoin block, around 1-2 BTC worth of transaction fees are also rewarded to the pool.
Some pools keep these fees for themselves and DO NOT share with their miners! BTCC evenly splits the transaction fees among its miners, just like it splits the 12.5 BTC reward.
Slush Pool Review
Slush Pool is run by Satoshi Labs and was the world’s first ever Bitcoin mining pool. It’s advanced yet also a great pool for beginners.

How to Join and Use Slush Pool
Slush Pool is easy to join.
- First, register an account.
- Configure your mining software to point your hardware’s hash power to Slush Pool.
- Enter your Bitcoin wallet address that will receive the payouts.

According to Slush’s website, there are the current URLs for the mining pool. You will want to point your software towards the URL location closest to you. This will maximize your mining profits.

What are Slush Pool’s Fees?
Slush Pool charges 2% of all payouts.
This may seem like a lot but unlike other pools it shares the transaction fees with its miners. At current levels, these amount to 1-2 BTC more per block.
Satoshi Labs
Satoshi Labs runs Slush Pool. They also make the Bitcoin TREZOR hardware wallet and Coinmap.org.
Ethereum Mining Pool
Many people want to use the pools above for Ethereum too. But, most of the pools listed above are only for Bitcoin mining. Please see our post on Ethereum mining pools for more info on ETH specific pools.
Litecoin Mining Pool
Like Ethereum, none of the pools above support litecoin. For LTC mining you will need separate hardware and a separate pool.
Bitcoin Mining Pool Taxes
You’ll have to consult an accountant or lawyer in your area. But most likely you will have to pay income tax on income from mining pools just like you would for any other type of income.

MultiMiner requires an installation of Mono to run on both Mac OS X and Linux, and requires an installation of Xquartz on Mac OS X. The only pre-requisite on Windows is version 3.5 of the .NET Framework.

Yahoo Search App from the Google Play Store on my Samsung Galaxy S8+ phone stopped working on May 18, 2018.
I went to the Yahoo Troubleshooting page but the article that said to do a certain 8 steps to fix the problem with Yahoo Services not working and how to fix the problem. Of course they didn't work.
I contacted Samsung thru their Samsung Tutor app on my phone. I gave their Technican access to my phone to see if there was a problem with my phone that stopped the Yahoo Search App from working. He went to Yahoo and I signed in so he could try to fix the Yahoo Search App not working. He also used another phone, installed the app from the Google Play Store to see if the app would do any kind of search thru the app. The Yahoo Search App just wasn't working.
I also had At&t try to help me because I have UVERSE for my internet service. My internet was working perfectly. Their Technical Support team member checked the Yahoo Search App and it wouldn't work for him either.
We can go to www.yahoo.com and search for any topic or website. It's just the Yahoo Search App that won't allow anyone to do web searches at all.
I let Google know that the Yahoo Search App installed from their Google Play Store had completely stopped working on May 18, 2018.
I told them that Yahoo has made sure that their Yahoo members can't contact them about anything.

I tried to search for things like www.homedepot.com. The same thing happened. It would say WEBPAGE NOT AVAILABLE. The only thing that changed were all the upper and lower case letters, numbers and symbols.

For example, when the network reaches a hash rate of 10 Th / s, it could do 10 trillion calculations per second. Thus, mining equipment with the highest hash rates (computing power) are able to complete a Bitcoin block in much less time than equipment with a low hash rate.

Antminer S7 ASIC Bitcoin Miner

Hashrate: 4.73 TH
The BitMaster S7 AntMiner has proven to be so popular since its launch in mid-2015 that it has now reached its 19th production batch. The S7 assumed market dominance for a good reason: It offers a high hashrate for the amount of energy it consumes. In fact many industrial mining farms still continue to operate with AntMiner S7s racks. The S7 is also a popular choice among amateur miners for its reasonable price and good performance.
The S7 is powered by a 28nm BM1385 ASIC processor. 135 of these chips are distributed across 3 boards and are kept cool by double fans (a single fan in the case of the most recent version). The strong metal housing features a tongue and groove system that allows the orderly arrangement of multiple miners.
The AntMiner S7 can reach to a hashrate of 4.73 TH / s (5 in its most recent revision) and consumes a minimum of 1293W. Its price is around 650 $.
Antminer S9 13 TH/S 16nm ASIC Bitcoin Miner

Hashrate: 13.5 TH / s (Antminer S9) and 11.5 TH / s (Antminer T9)
The Antminer S9 is one of the most recent ASIC miners of the company Bitmain. With a hashrate of 13.5 TH / s this is one of the best miners available on the market.
For a price that can be around US $ 2,900 (excluding the power supply), the device uses the most modern chip in the company. The Bitmain BM1387 chip is the most efficient bitcoin chip today is using TSM’s FinFET technology at 16nm and, with a record of 0.098 J / GHs,. It has a total of 189 of these chips distributed in 3 circuit boards, which combine to achieve a high processing power. This hardware triples the hashrate of the previous generation of miners, producing almost 14 terahash per second, while at the same time owning the energy consumption level of the Antminer S7 miners.
The Antminer S9 almost the same size and follows the same form factor as the very popular Antminer S7. However, it has more than three times the power and double the efficiency of the S7. The S9 making it about 2.5 times more efficient than the Antminer S7 as it uses just 0.1 jules per Gigahash. The total power consumption of the device is around 1350W.
Although some time has passed since its launch (it was introduced in June 2016) the S9 is still by far the largest ASIC miner available on the market. Everything seems to indicate that it will remain at the top of ASIC mining equipment for at least 1 year.
This is due to the manufacturing process of 16 nm used in the manufacture of S9, which represents a huge jump compared to 28 nm of the previous generation. Although a 10nm process is on the horizon by the end of 2017, further increases beyond that remain theoretical.
It should be noted that Bitmain sends its Bitcoin miners in batches. Each lot is different from the other and they also have a different hashrate. In the last revisions, the hashrate has remained around 13.5 TH / s.
Due to the limited production of units, the price of Antminer S9 varies greatly. On the official site of Bitmain you can buy it for approximately $ 1300 dollars. In Amazon you can find it for a figure that can reach $ 3000 and on eBay you can have it for only $ 2000 (probably the best place to look for it). It should be noted that if you want to acquire directly through Bitmain you must be aware of the arrival of each new lot, as these are sold out in a matter of days.
AvalonMiner 741

Hashrate: 7.3 TH
The bitcoins mining market has been quiet settled in the last 12 months for a number of reasons. Requiring users to remain more patient than usual due to the scarcity of new options. But at the beginning of the year, news can change the landscape for those who did not expect major changes in 2017, and it is precisely the return of the Avalon miner, this time from the Chinese company Canaan.
The AvalonMiner 741 unit with dimensions of 40 x 21 x 22 cm & a 4.8 kg. Which makes it a practical, lightweight miner ideal for running bitcoins mining both at home and on a large scale.

Antminer T9 uses the same ASIC 16nm chip as Antminer S9 and can deliver a hashrate of 11.5TH / s with an efficiency of 0.126J / GH (+ 7%).
The new AntMiner S9 miner that are apparently synchronized with a higher operating frequency & comes with slightly less chips. The new T9 is a little cheaper, but not as efficient as the S9, based on the official specifications we know that the T9 consumes around 1450W and offers 11.5 TH / s while lot 22 of the S9 arrived with 11 TH / Sa only 1078W and lot 23 with 14 TH / s for a consumption of 1372W.
The new T9 miner comes with only 171 BM1387 chips, while the S9 is based on 189 BM1387 chips. The two cooling fans of the new device are the same as the S9, so you can expect a similar level of device noise.
This makes us wonder why Bitmain would replace the more potent S9? The answer to this has to do with the stability problems encountered in some units of S9. The T9 has been redesigned to offer better stability and efficiency, with a lower cost of production.
In summary, the new AntMiner T9 does not seem so smart at first sight. But with the lack of new S9 miners in the market and its low cost proof that we do not have a better option available in market.
Antminer R4 Silent Designed Bitcoin Miner

Hashrate: 8.6 TH
The Bitmain Company introduce the most recent and exclusive product the Antminer R4 is one. R4 reaches 8.6 TH / s with an efficiency of 0.098 J / GHs, making it the second fastest miner behind Antminer S9 and just ahead of Antminer S7. The R4 uses 126 16-bit Bitmain BM1387 ASIC chips. The BM1387 chip is built using TSMC’s latest 16MM FinFET technology.
Antminer R4 is one of the most unique features that it is designed to ensure the minimum possible sound with maximum hash speed. The Antminer R4 replaces the traditional fan with a system of rotary blades. The traditional fan has been the biggest source of noise for other mining equipment. The R4 fan is similar to the fan of a quiet split air conditioner and reduces the noise of a standard miner by 50% to a noise level of 51 db. The fan speed is controlled automatically, ensuring that the noise is regulated.
With a hash rate of 8.6 TH / s, the R4 is the second most powerful miner on the market, behind the Antminer S9. It has an energy consumption of approximately 845 W using an APW5 PSU power supply.
Leaving aside the price we have that the R4 is one of the best bitcoin mining equipment for the mine, thanks to its compact and quiet design. Consider an investment of approximately $ 4313 for the R4 and $ 240 for the PSU of APW5.

Avalon, the company that first introduced ASIC chips to Bitcoin mining, launched a new miner at the end of 2016 with a very unusual move. The AvalonMiner 721 (or more commonly known as Avalon 7) seems to be a minor upgrade from its predecessor, the Avalon 6.
The AvalonMiner 721 incorporates the latest A3212 processor using the 16 nm TSMC process with Smart Layout, the AvalonMiner 721 contains 72 A3212 chips in each unit providing a consistent 6 Terahash per second (THS) at 900 Watts, all designed for long-lasting operation.
Any good 1100W power supply will work with the Avalon 7. The unit uses about 1050 watts when using a platinum rated PSU and is quiet enough to run at home. It is also possible to reduce the base frequency to reduce the level of noise and heat generated.
