Buy Bitcoin (BTC)

How to receive Bitcoin

First of all you need a Bitcoin address for receiving Bitcoin. You can either use an online wallet like SpectroCoin or download the official Bitcoin client Bitcoin Core. If you want to download the official client, you need to wait several hours after installation, until all necessary data (about 180 GB at the moment) is downloaded.

On mobile devices you can download the easy-to-use Bitcoin App for receiving and sending Bitcoin. With this app you can easily generate your own Bitcoin addresses and you can send Bitcoin by scanning a QR code or by copying the recipient's Bitcoin address.

Buy Bitcoin with PayPal

There are few options for buying Bitcoin using PayPal but there are several disadvantages when using this payment method like pretty high deposit and trading fees. We recommend to pay via credit card or bank transfer to save costs, if you have the opportunity to do that. If you want to use PayPal payment anyway, you can check out the Virtual World Exchange VirWoX, that supports PayPal and credit card payments. In order to get Bitcoins on VirWoX, you need to buy Linden Dollars (SLL) first and exchange them for Bitcoins afterwards. This will cost deposit fees (about 3,5%) and additional trading fees (about 4%).

You can also use a peer-to-peer exchange like Paxful to buy Bitcoin instantly with PayPal. Paxful connects buyers with sellers and supports more than 150 payment methods. Another option is the peer-to-peer network Local Bitcoins that also supports a huge amount of currencies and payment options.

LocalBitcoins

Initially, select your country if it's not automatically detected.

You'll see a list of Bitcoin offerings sorted by price including all payment methods.

Click "show more" under the list and select PayPal as a payment method.

Now you see all Bitcoin sellers that accept PayPal.

Next to the seller two numbers are shown: The first one is the total number of confirmed trades of the user, the second one represents the feedback score displayed in percent. Click the seller to see additional information like the account creation date, blocks and verification.

Choose one of the available sellers and click "Buy". Please read the respective conditions carefully and note that the site LocalBitcoins only provides the peer-to-peer platform, the Bitcoins are sold by private individuals.

Select payment via PayPal and click "buy Bitcoin now".

On the next screen all available offerings are shown.

Every user on the site gets a reputation score, which is calculated on the basis of positive and negative votes. Use this score to choose a reliable Bitcoin seller.

If you can find a good offer that you want to accept, you need to create an account first.

Enter the amount of money you want to spend and click "buy now". The corresponding Paxful fee appears to the top right of the box.

Another way to get Bitcoin instantly via PayPal payment is a secured loan offered by the peer-to-peer Bitcoin lending site xCoins. Just like the two peer-to-peer sites described above, xCoins is a platform that brings together lenders and borrowers. If you want to learn more about this method, just visit the xCoins FAQ for more details.

Buy Bitcoin with Credit Card

If you have a Visa credit card, you can use CoinMama to purchase Bitcoin. Coinmama is easier to use than most other exchanges, you just need to enter the required amount. Furthermore there is the exchange site CEX.IO which accepts several credit and debit cards. There are two options to trade Bitcoin on CEX.IO. You can buy instantly (click "BUY/SELL") or do a market trade instead (click "Trade").

How to Buy Bitcoins with PayPal

We can both agree on this:

Buying bitcoins with PayPal is hard and confusing.

Luckily, today we'll show you how easy and fast it can be.

We've put together the complete guide on how to convert PayPal to bitcoin.

We'll get into the tutorial soon.

First, understand this:

VirWoX is the easiest and most popular way to buy bitcoins with PayPal.

VirWoX is the workaround/hack discussed in this guide.

It's not super simple, but yes it really works and is the best way to buy bitcoin with PayPal today.

We suggest using the exchanges listed below or doing research before buying from any exchange.

Many exchanges are simply trying to steal your passwords and personal information!

We do research on every exchange we list and are very careful not to include scam exchanges on our site.

VirWoX: The PayPal to Bitcoin Exchange

VirWoX

Here’s what’s funny:

Technically, VirWoX is not a Bitcoin exchange.

VirWoX primarily serves as a market for Second Life Lindens, a currency used in the virtual world, Second Life.

Although you cannot buy bitcoins with PayPal directly through VirWoX, it is possible to buy Second Life Lindens (SLL) and then sell these for bitcoins.

While complex, this process works reliably.

The major drawback is that all the associated fees total roughly 10%.

A quick step-by-step guide on how to buy bitcoins with PayPal on VirWoX exchange:

  1. Deposit dollars or euros using PayPal to VirWoX exchange.
  2. Purchase "Second Life Lindens" with your USD or EUR
  3. Buy bitcoins with your "Second Life Lindens"
  4. Withdraw the BTC to your own Bitcoin wallet!
  • The easiest and perhaps only reliable way to purchase bitcoins with PayPal or Skrill
  • Convenience at a price; around 10% in fees to buy bitcoins with PayPal

Note: You may need to wait a couple days after opening a VirWoX account before you can deposit money.

After your first deposit, future deposits can be made instantly.

Your initial buying limit is $90 per day or $270 per month, although these limits grow quickly with time!

Before we start:

You'll need a Bitcoin wallet to withdraw your coins to after you buy.

Don't have a wallet?

Read our guide on the best Bitcoin wallets.

Recommendation

The 10% fees are crazy high for buying bitcoins with PayPal.

Were you buying with a PayPal account connected to your credit or debit card?

The fees are much lower and you'll get your bitcoins faster.

Tutorial: Buying Bitcoin with PayPal on VirWoX

Here are step-by-step instructions to help make buying BTC with PayPal easier:

1. Open an account on VirWoX

From the home page, click on “Not registered yet?”

2. Enter the details for your account

Now you’ll enter your details in order to create an account. Don’t get confused by the section titled “Link to avatar”. You can leave this untouched.

3. Check your email

At this point, your account has been created. A temporary password will be emailed to the address you provided in step two.

This password is temporary and MUST be changed. If you don’t change this password within 24 hours your account will be deleted. We show you how to change your password in the next step.

4. Change your password

Once you login with your temporary password, click on “Change settings” in the left sidebar.

5. Create a new password

Enter a new password. Make sure you choose a strong password, since you're dealing with money!

6. Deposit from PayPal

Once you’ve changed your password, click on “Deposit” in the left sidebar.

7. Deposit and select amount

Scroll down a bit to find the option to deposit with PayPal. Enter the amount you want to deposit on the left and then click the “Checkout with PayPal” button.

8. Login to PayPal

Sign in to PayPal. Note on the left side that I'm depositing $2. This is the amount I chose back in step 7. If this amount is not what you chose, go back and enter a new amount.

9. Verify account balance

If you followed PayPal’s directions successfully, you should now see a balance in your VirWoX account. Note that the amount displayed in your VirWoX account may be slightly less than the amount you entered in step 7. This is because PayPal charges a 2.9% + $0.30 fee per deposit.

After this, click on “USD/SLL”. If you deposited with Euro then click “EUR/SLL”.

10. Trade USD for Second Life Lindens

Remember how we said you’ll have to buy Second Life Lindens and then trade those for bitcoins? Well, now we’re buying the SLL. In this step you need to sell the USD you deposited from PayPal and get SLL.

Enter the amount of USD you want to sell.

11. Complete order

You can see in the top left of the image below that I now have a balance in SLL. If you now have SLL, that means everything has gone well.

Now click on “BTC/SLL” in the left sidebar. Now we’re going to exchange our SLL for bitcoin.

12. Trade SLL for BTC

The process is the same here. Simply enter the amount of BTC you want to buy and click “Next”.

13. Buy bitcoin!

That’s it! You should now see your balance in BTC displayed in the top left of the screen. You’ve successfully bought bitcoin with PayPal.

Recommendation

Did you just buy bitcoins? Don't store your bitcoins on VirWoX!

Frequently Asked Questions

If you're still a bit confused, that's okay. Buying bitcoins is hard and that's why I built this site.

The FAQ section below should answer all of your remaining questions.

Is using VirWoX really the fastest and best way to buy bitcoins via PayPal?

PayPal bans its users from selling bitcoins for PayPal funds.

Even if sellers were allowed to accept PayPal for bitcoins, the risk of fraud and chargebacks would be too large and premiums/fees would likely be higher than VirWoX.

One way that may be better is if you are able to find a local dealer at a Bitcoin meetup. If someone you trust is willing to sell you bitcoins directly for PayPal, this a good option.

Recommendation

The fees are crazy high for buying bitcoins with PayPal.

Were you buying with a PayPal account connected to your credit or debit card?

The fees are much lower and you'll get your bitcoins faster.

As a PayPal merchant, can I accept bitcoins?

There have been rumors of Bitcoin integration for PayPal merchants. At this time, however, this is still no way to accept bitcoins through PayPal's merchant tools.

Does PayPal Accept Bitcoin as a Deposit Method?

You can't fund your PayPal account using Bitcoin from within PayPal.

Using an exchange like Coinbase you can sell bitcoins to your PayPal account.

Can I Buy Bitcoin with PayPal on Coinbase?

Is There a PayPal Bitcoin Wallet?

Even so, PayPal still has not integrated Bitcoin with its services.

Is there a VirWoX Review I can read?

We've put together a complete review of VirWoX. To read it, click here.

Can I Buy Bitcoin with PayPal No ID?

VirWoX does not require ID to purchase although you may be required to use a verified PayPal account.

What is Paxful?

Paxful is a LocalBitcoins type service that also allows people to buy bitcoin with PayPal. We don't list it here, though, since VirWoX is the main method we can recommend for now.

recommendation

Do you want to buy bitcoins more privately? Try buying bitcoins with cash instead.

Should I leave my bitcoins on the exchange after I buy?

We really recommend storing any bitcoins you want to keep safe in a wallet you own.

Many Bitcoin exchanges have been hacked and lost customer funds. If you don't want to fall victim to these hacks then the easiest way is to store your coins in a wallet you control.

Can you sell bitcoins to PayPal?

As mentioned above, you can use Coinbase in the USA and some of Europe. The fees for selling bitcoins to PayPal are 3.75% using Coinbase.

You can always reverse the process explained in this post, but that comes with the same crazy 10% fees.

Can you buy other cryptocurrency using this method?

You can use this method to buy bitcoins and then trade the bitcoins for another cryptocurrency using an exchange like Poloniex or Kraken.

Does Poloniex accept PayPal?

Poloniex is currently one of the biggest crypto exchanges and many people want to know if it accepts deposits via PayPal.

Well, the answer is no. Poloniex only deals with cryptocurrency and does not accept deposits using credit card, bank transfer, cash or PayPal.

Theft, Scams, and Storage

If you get one thing from this article let it be this:

Don't store your bitcoins on exchanges.

I've been buying bitcoins for more than three years. I've never lost any money to scams or thefts. Follow the guidelines in this article and you'll be able to do the same.

Here are two examples where users got screwed by leaving bitcoins on exchanges:

And there are many more I could list.

Make sure you get yourself a Bitcoin wallet that will securely store your bitcoins.

Besides storage, there are many scam exchanges out to steal your credit card information and/or bitcoins.

Following these two basic principles should help you avoid theft, scams, and any other loss of funds:

  1. Do research before buying on any exchange. Check reviews, ratings, and regulation information.
  2. Don't store coins on the exchange. Already mentioned above but worth repeating.

How to Buy Bitcoin with PayPal on LocalBitcoins

We don't recommend buying bitcoins with PayPal on LocalBitcoins. The prices are much higher than VirWoX and the limits usually lower.

With LocalBitcoins, the fees are even worse as the premium is about 20% compared to the global Bitcoin exchange rate. Plus another 1% charged by LocalBitcoins!

Another difference is with LocalBitcoins you are dealing with an individual seller rather than a marketplace. You will also need a verified phone number connected to your LocalBitcoins account.

To start, login to LocalBitcoins and then enter your buy amount and PayPal as the payment method:

You should now see a list of sellers willing to accept PayPal. Note that when I wrote this guide, the price of Bitcoin was $1,000 so the prices are mostly even more than 20% above the market rate!

Click on one of the sellers and you'll see a page like this:

In the example above, you can see the buyer's limits on the left side (25-100 USD). On the right, the buyer has laid a number of rules and requirements for your PayPal account. This buyer, for example, requires that you send a picture of your photo ID, have a verified PayPal account, and also send a selfie holding your ID. VirWoX does not have any of these requirements. Also, most sellers on LocalBitcoins do not sell to residents of New York.

Note, you can also check a seller's feedback and history. Click on the username on the right side and a new tab will show that looks like this:

This seller has 3,000+ confirmed trades so your transaction would likely go through smoothly. If a seller has no feedback/history, this is a huge red flag!

If you had a verified account then on the left side you would be able to enter how much you want to buy and go through with your trade!

5 Methods to Buy Bitcoin With PayPal Instantly in 2018

Last updated on April 30th, 2018 at 02:58 pm

Buy Bitcoin with PayPal – step by step tutorial

One of the biggest issues today in Bitcoin is the fact that you can’t buy it very easily. Even though PayPal has been very favorable of Bitcoin in the past 4 years, it’s still an issue to find credible places to buy Bitcoins with PayPal in 2018.

Why won’t PayPal allow this ? Simple. There are numerous chargeback cases created by scammers who buy Bitcoin with PayPal from you and then claim they didn’t receive anything. This way they get to keep their money and their Bitcoins (here’s a short video illustrating this).

Post summary:

  1. Go to Virwox
  2. Deposit money to your account with PayPal
  3. Buy SLL on the SLL/USD exchange
  4. Buy Bitcoins with your newly purchased SLL on the SLL/BTC exchange
  5. Withdraw your Bitcoins

And now for a more detailed explanation and some additional options…

Bitcoin exchanges

Local Bitcoins

Buy Bitcoins with PayPal through eToro

Pros: Relatively low fees, variety of payment methods accepted

Cons: You don’t actually own the Bitcoins, not available in the US

The easiest way to buy Bitcoin with PayPal if you’re only looking to profit from Bitcoin’s price swings would be through eToro. The platform will allow you to buy Bitcoins with PayPal but you will not be able to withdraw them or send them to other people – you will only be able to sell them for fiat currency (i.e. Dollars, Euros, etc.). This method is only valid if you live outside of the US.

So if you’re only looking to profit from price swings and don’t require the actual Bitcoins this is probably the easiest and cheapest way to go. If however, you need the actual Bitcoins to buy stuff or send them to another person, keep on reading.

IMPORTANT! If you use eToro you don’t actually need a Bitcoin wallet as they don’t supply you the actual coins. Also, Cryptocurrencies can widely fluctuate in prices and are not appropriate for all investors. Trading cryptocurrencies is not supervised by any EU regulatory framework. So keep in mind that your capital is at risk.

Buy Bitcoins with PayPal through Virwox

Pros: A reliable method that has been around for a long time.

Cons: High fees

Now since no exchange currently allows a way around the charge back issues of buying Bitcoins with PayPal we are going to have to go through Virwox – The Virtual World Exchange. We will use a virtual currency called SLL (Second Life Linden Dollars), This currency is used for one of the biggest virtual worlds today – Second Life.

After buying this currency with PayPal (which is acceptable) we will then trade it to Bitcoins. My guess is that Virwox is able to do this method since they are not directly selling you Bitcoins with PayPal but rather selling you SLL with PayPal which they can prove if you received (unlike Bitcoin since it’s anonymous in nature).

Things you should know about Virwox before we get started:

  • Because of chargeback risk Virwox is taking on themselves they are limiting the amount you can deposit initially through PayPal or a credit card, here are the exact limits according to their website from April 29th 2018.

  • This process holds more transaction fees than usual. This may still be a valid solution since the soaring numbers of BTC compensate for this. It’s important for you to be aware of the different transaction fees.
  • Virwox is delaying new user transactions for up to 48 hours. This means that it can take you 2 days to complete this process (still way faster than using a wire transfer).
  • If you still don’t receive the Bitcoins after 48 hours (which is very unusual) you can contact Virwox at [email protected]

1. Go to Virwox.

Virwox is an exchange of virtual currency, you can buy there Lindens, Bitcoins, and more. It has more than 400,000 registered users and is a Second Life Lindens authorized reseller.

2. Open a free account

Click on the “not registered yet” on the top of the left sidebar to open up a new account as shown here:

3. Fill out our personal details

Fill out your username and email address. Where it asks for “avatar name” just leave it at “No Avatar”, it doesn’t matter, since you’re not going to play Second Life.

4. Activate your account

5. IMPORTANT. Change your password!

Do not worry about the message saying “Your avatar connection has not been validated yet” – it is irrelevant.

6. Fund your account through PayPal

Note: From now on for each transaction you will make there will be a fee – make sure you are aware of the relevant deposit and withdrawal fees.

7. Buy SLL with USD

Note: If you haven’t made a deposit yet you will get the screen shown above requesting you to deposit before you buy SLL.

8. Buy BTC with SLL

9. Withdraw your Bitcoins

Will this method actually work?

Probably yes. I’m saying probably because I have received a handful of emails from people who weren’t able to get their Bitcoins. having said that, from all of the people who didn’t get their coins I haven’t gotten one email stating their money wasn’t returned to them. So yes, the process is a bit irritating but I have been using this method since 2013 and it hasn’t failed me yet.

How much fees will be deducted from my deposit?

This is probably the second most asked question I get. It’s important to understand that when you buy Bitcoins through Virwox you are actually conducting two transactions. USD to SLL and SLL to BTC. This means you’ll need to pay a fee for each of these transactions.

The problem is that Virwox’s fee structure is always changing that is why I advise to check each case in person before proceeding. There is a pretty cool site which shows you the current BTC/USD rate after all of Virwox’s fees. I’m not sure how reliable the site is but you can check it out for yourself here.

Are there any other methods to buy Bitcoin with Paypal other than Virowx?

Yes. However Virwox has been around for the longest time and therefore is the most reliable. If you continue reading this post I will cover 4 more methods that you can use but each of them has its pros and cons.

Buy Bitcoins with PayPal through Local Bitcoins

Pros: Wide variety of sellers from around the world

Cons: High fees, the chance of scam

If you’re still looking for additional ways you can take a look at LocalBitcoins and try to find sellers that perhaps will be willing to sell you Bitcoin with PayPal.

Local Bitcoins, unlike Virwox is a marketplace where buyers and sellers meet. If you use this option you’ll be dealing with an actual person which means that credibility also comes into play. The way you can use Local Bitcoins to buy Bitcoins with PayPal is by finding a person that is willing to sell them to you. But since the seller is taking a big risk (as I explained at the beginning of this post) the will usually charge a really big premium (most of the times this will be more expensive than Virwox). The upside is that you will usually get your Bitcoins faster.

1. Enter your search parameters

The first step will be to go to Local Bitcoins and enter how much you want to buy and from which country. Since Local Bitcoins was originally made for people to meet face to face there is no “worldwide” search which is a shame. This means that there is no way to see all of the people who are willing to sell you will PaPal worldwide other than going through each country one at a time.

2. Choose your seller

On the next screen you’ll see a list of available sellers, you can now browse them one by one. Here are the things to take into account: Feedback score – Located under the seller’s name. It’s advised to conduct transactions only with high feedback sellers.

Trade limits – Each seller has a minimum / maximum amount of Bitcoins he’s willing to trade.

Payment window – How much time you have for paying the purchase and marking the payment done after you initiate a trade. It’s also super important to read the terms of trade for the specific seller located on the right side. Here’s an example:

Some sellers will require you have an initial reputation in order to buy from them so they can avoid scams or fraud. This means that you will perhaps have to conduct some small transactions just to get reputation.

3. Complete the trade

Once you’ve found your seller just enter how much you will to buy and click on “Send trade request”.
Keep in mind that it’s crucial to conduct all communications within Local Bitcoins and preferably use their Escrow services (which are triggered automatically for all online sales). This method is faster the Virwox but it can take you a lot of time to gain enough reputation, find your seller and also the premiums are really high (around %30 and more…).

Buy Bitcoin with Paypal through Wirex

Pros: Medium fees

Cons: Requires a long time to complete (around 10 days)

Wirex is a company that supplies virtual and physical Bitcoin debit cards. Since it’s just like any other debit card you can useWirex’s card with your PayPal account. In order to buy Bitcoins with your Wirex debit card here’s what you’ll need to do:

1.Order a physical / virtual debit card from Wirex

Go to Wirex. Click on “request new card” and choose the type of card you want. It’s possible to buy Bitcoins with PayPal through both cards (physical and virtual).

A Virtual card should cost around $3 and will be enough for this process.

2. Connect that debit card to your PayPal account and verify it

Inside your PayPal account, go to “Wallet” -> “Add a card” and add your newly acquired virtual Bitcoin credit card.

One the card is added you will need to verify it. In order to verify the card you’ll need to have a balance of at least $3 on it so that PayPal will be able to charge you. Once PayPal charges you, you will see a 4 digit code next to that transaction on your Wirex account. That 4 digit code in the verification pin for your card on PayPal.

3. Deposit funds to your PayPal account

I’ll assume you know how to do that :)

4. Withdraw funds from your PayPal account to your Wirex account

Go to “Wallet” -> “Withdraw funds” and choose the “withdraw funds to your card” option.

Make sure to choose your Wirex card. The withdrawal can take up to 7 days to appear in your Wirex account.

5. Buy Bitcoins with your funded Wirex debit card

Now that your Wirex card has funds in it, you can use them to buy Bitcoins.

The whole process can take some time as verifying your Wirex card with PayPal takes some time and withdrawing the funds can take up to 7 business days depending on where you live.

Buy Bitcoins with PayPal through Paxful

Pros: Wide variety of sellers from around the world

Cons: High exchange rate, the chance of getting scammed

Paxful is the smaller less known version of LocalBitcoins. It’s a peer to peer marketplace that allows you to buy Bitcoins with almost anything (e.g. Skype credits, Amazon gift cards). The process of buying Bitcoins at Paxful is pretty simple:

  1. Create an account
  2. Choose a payment method for buying and the desired amount
  3. Choose your seller – You can either choose manually or let Paxful decide who is the best seller for you.

Once the trade initiates you will be sent in to an online chat with the seller where you can finalize the deal. The seller’s Bitcoins will be sent into Escrow and once you mark that you’ve sent your payment they will be released into your account. Keep in mind that if you don’t finalize the deal within a certain timeframe (usually 30 minutes) the deal will be auto-cancelled.

Buy bitcoin with paypal

There are many ways to Buy Bitcoin with Paypal.

LocalBitcoins is the easiest way to buy Bitcoin with Paypal, Cash, and other ways. But it is a bit risky as it is a marketplace and you need to be careful before closign the deal.

Check the profile of the person and then proceed the deal.

Paxful is another simple and easy way to Buy Bitcoin using Paypal and is exactly similar to LocalBitcoins.

But Paxful has much more option of payment which surely gives an upper hand to it over Localbitcoins.

The process of Virwox is quite lengthy but is more secure and the charges are a bit lower than any other way.

You can read the complete process of How To Buy Bitcoin with Paypal through Virwox Here.

Thanks for the A2A.

For purchasing bitcoin with PayPal, I would try to use a site like Paxful or Local Bitcoins . Be careful buying on here since there are lots of scammers and fraudulent sellers. If you are buying with PayPal make sure that you say nothing about bitcoin anywhere in your payment. PayPal will terminate your account if they know that you are using it to purchase bitcoin so don’t even use the word “bitcoin” or “btc” anywhere on their site.

You might also want to try some local meetup groups or find someone who is selling on a facebook group or maybe the Google+ Bitcoin group . Even if you can’t find a buyer in these groups, these communities have some incredibly intelligent and well educated bitcoiners so someone will be able to point you in the right direction.

Good luck and let me know if you have any further questions or comments.

One more option is to go with another indirect method, and that is to use a PayPal debit card. This allows you to use funds which are in your PP account, but without using PP itself as your payment method.

This method is recommended by CEX.IO . It can be used on CEX.IO , and should also work on other sites which accept debit or credit card as a payment method to purchase bitcoin.

I highly advise checking out this method, because you do not need to worry about opening up accounts on third party websites just to buy bitcoin which you plan to trade on other exchange. You are only dealing with PayPal and whatever exchange you intend to use (like CEX.IO ).

The basic steps are as follows:

1. Open an account on a site like CEX.IO which accepts PayPal debit card payments.
2. Open a PP business account (see the pros and cons to learn more about this—there are situations where a personal account may be acceptable).
3. Apply for the PayPal Business Debit MasterCard.
4. Wait for approval. After you are approved, your card will be sent to you. This takes around 7-10 business days.

Once you have your PayPal debit card, you are able to use it to pay with PayPal anywhere that MasterCard is accepted. That means that the money comes out of your PP account, not your regular bank account. As a bonus, you can earn 1% cash back.

If you screw something up and PP declines your application, wait 30 days, fix whatever you did wrong, and then try again. Note that you can only get a PayPal debit card if you are located in the USA and have a valid street address.

You now can use your PayPal debit card to buy bitcoin using PP on CEX.IO or any other website which accepts MasterCard as a payment method for cryptocurrencies.

For those who meet the requirements, this is probably one of the simplest and most straightforward ways to pay for bitcoin using PayPal, even if it is indirect.
Using this method really opens up the number of websites where you can conduct transactions. Again, very few websites accept PayPal as a payment method for cryptocurrencies, but you will find a reasonable selection accepting credit and debit cards. So long as they take MasterCard, you are all set.
You may be able to minimize your fees using this method.

This method is only available to people who live in the USA.
You generally need to have a business account in order to get a debit card from PayPal. The exception is if you have a personal account which has received a minimum of $500 within the past 12 months.
You must use a valid US street address in order to do this, not a PO box.

Additionally, the PayPal has recently integrated its operations with another money platform called Braintree, effectively allowing merchants to accept payments in bitcoins.

This article will show you how to purchase bitcoins with PayPal instantly and safely while listing exchanges that accept the PayPal purchases. These brokers shall be evaluated in terms of speed of the purchase process, the rate of the transaction fees and security they provide for their customers.

Bitcoin Exchanges List

In this guide, we have compiled a list of bitcoin exchange brokers that accept PayPal payments while presenting their fees, limitations, pros, and contras. The listed exchanges are VirWox, E-Coin (Wirex), LocalBitcoins, Coinbase, Paxful, and Cryptonit.

The interesting fact about VirWox is that the exchange is not deemed as bitcoin exchange but rather as a cryptocurrency exchange. Broker deals with both bitcoins and Second Life Lindens (SLLs) equally, with later being the main income of the exchange. The SLLs are used in a virtual world called Second Life, while in the case of VirWox, they are used to buying bitcoins.

The transactions are operated without verification and with no ID, making this exchange one of the most popular for bitcoin trade with PayPal. As a trader, you would start with a daily limit of $90 and monthly $270 that would eventually grow with time. The transaction fees stand at around 10% as you cannot buy bitcoins directly, making you pay a fee twice, once for SLLs and then for BTCs.

  • no verification needed;
  • purchase limitations grow with time.

  • high 10% transaction fee;
  • indirect and complex bitcoin purchase.

Wirex (ex-ECoin)

Being bitcoin exchanger, Wirex offers bitcoin purchases with bank cards, transfers, and PayPal. Currently, the broker allows PayPal purchases from 33 countries as of yet. In addition to PayPal account, you would be required to order Wirex cards as well and to fund these cards with your PayPal account.

The verification process is divided into two sections, one being unverified and other verified. The unverified status is reserved for those traders who would only verify their email and PayPal account. The status would grant you limitations of $2,000, which is both daily and lifetime limit. Full verification covers a copy of your ID and proof of address, granting you limits of $10,000 daily and unlimited amounts in a lifetime.

Wirex itself does not charge any purchasing fees, though PayPal fees would need to be taken into account, depending on your location.

  • no verification needed for starters;
  • no purchasing fees.

  • full verification needed for higher limits;
  • limited regional coverage.

LocalBitcoins

Being peer-to-peer (P2P) platform, the exchange offers a wide variety of purchase options that include PayPal as well. Bitcoins are traded by investors between themselves and they are the ones that put required payment options based on their needs. All you have to do is to find a person that is willing to trade BTC with PayPal and engage in the transaction.

The purchase amount is limited by the traders as well, as they offer an exact volume of BTC that they wish to sell. The only fee that you would pay in this platform is the transaction fee of 1%.

You should take great care with whom you work as there have been numerous frauds reported, mostly done by unverified accounts.

  • a large amount of BTC offer;
  • possible to purchase BTC anonymously.

  • a lot of scamming offers;
  • usually, a small amount of BTC is available.

One of the most famous bitcoin exchangers, Coinbases’ services are available in EU countries, the USA, Canada, Europe, Singapore, and Australia. PayPal purchases are instant for a fee of 3.99% for all countries, while limitations on purchase volumes depend on your location and verification process. The more you verify the larger limits you will have.

Coinbase also offers the Vault option should clients wish to have a bitcoin wallet located on the platform for easier purchase and selling processes. With low fees when compared to other competitors, Coinbase is also considered as one of the most liquid exchanges in terms of bitcoin purchase and sales.

  • high liquidity;
  • low PayPal fees.

  • limited regional coverage;
  • heavy verification needed for higher purchase limitations.

Another P2P platform, Paxful also provides a single marketplace for traders to buy and sell bitcoins to each other. The transaction fees stand at 1% for a seller only, while buyers do not have any fees. The purchase duration depends on the trader that you work with. Similar to LocalBitcoins, the limitations and privacy of the bitcoin purchasing depend on the trader, though the more verified you are, the more eligible sellers would be willing to work with you.

Lastly, you should keep an eye on the scammers and frauds, same as in LocalBitcoins. One major difference, when compared to other P2P platforms, is the kiosk programs. The Paxful offers divisional support to those investors that wish to open a bitcoin kiosk, provided they have substantial BTC and cash funds.

  • a wide variety of purchase options;
  • kiosk programs;
  • no fee for bitcoin buyers.

  • high number of scams;
  • usually, a small amount of BTC is available.

Cryptonit is a bitcoin exchanger that accepts deposits from PayPal accounts. The deposit fee stands at 9.8% while the trading fees are free, though the deposit fees could be viewed as high in regard to other bitcoin providers.

Verification should be completed fully in order to purchase and withdraw bitcoins from the site. The verification documents Consist of scanned copy of ID, address verification document and a selfie of you holding both documents as a proof of identity.

The broker is based in the UK and its services are available global wide.

  • globally available;
  • instant purchase and withdrawal of BTC.

  • full verification needed;
  • high 9.8% deposit fee by using PayPal.

Buying with PayPal: FAQ

What Is the Best Way to Buy Bitcoins?

The best way and the best place to buy bitcoins are the ones that suit your needs and situation the best. It could be credit card payment in broker platform or PayPal in P2P, it all depends on how you have organized your fund sources and how does the BTC market function in your area.

Is VirWoX the Fastest Way to Get BTC via PayPal?

Although faster than other exchanges, the VirWox is still slower than, for example, Coinbase as you have to purchase bitcoins indirectly. Additionally, PayPal could be used to simply deposit the funds in the exchange’s escrow system until the purchase transaction finishes, as is the case in several exchanges.

It is fast, that is to be sure but only if you follow the guide we have provided for you as the process is quite complex.

Can You Fund Your PayPal Account Using Bitcoin?

In PayPal account, you cannot have bitcoin balance as of yet, since the policy of the PayPal company is designed to hold the funds expressed in USD only. Additionally, the exchange activities are strictly forbidden but you can indirectly fund your PayPal account by buying and selling bitcoins outside of PayPal.

Buying Bitcoin with PayPal No ID?

Buying bitcoin with PayPal and without ID scan is quite possible in several exchanges. In VirWox, you could purchase SLLs with PayPal with only email and PayPal account verified. Then, the purchase of BTC would be done through conversion of SLLs into BTC.

In P2P platforms, you could find traders that would not mind if you have not verified your ID as long as you keep to the agreed terms of the transaction.

Can I Accept Bitcoins with PayPal Merchant Tool?

As mentioned before, you can purchase bitcoins through PayPal but sell and accepting payments for BTC is strictly forbidden as it would be viewed as currency exchange activity, which is against the PayPal’s business conduction policy. Thus, it is not possible (yet) to accept bitcoins with PayPal merchant tool.

Can I Sell My BTC to PayPal?

No, you cannot. You would need to sell it and receive funds elsewhere before you transfer them back to your PayPal account. If you receive funds for bitcoins through receipt that mentions BTC as a source of the trade, it is highly likely that your PayPal will be blocked from the PayPal’s staff.

Update from July 2017: Yes, you can. Coinbase allows you to sell bitcoins to your PayPal account.

Is There a PayPal BTC Wallet?

Unfortunately, there is not. The PayPal is used to store funds in other currencies, while cryptocurrencies are not supported by PayPal.

Can I Leave My Bitcoins on the Exchange?

It is quite possible though we would not recommend you to do so. Hacking incidents have happened in the past, which resulted in many traders losing both funds and bitcoins in the process. It is far safer to get either USB or hardware wallet or stash your bitcoins there for maximized security.

Avoid Scams!

Regularly check scam site lists if you wish to work with bitcoin exchange brokers and trader profiles and ratings if you wish to engage in P2P platforms. Bitcoin community grew in numbers, thus there are many websites and forums dedicated to reviewing exchangers and websites.

Use BTC Hardware USB Wallets

The hardware wallets come at different shapes and prices but all have similar traits. All of them have installed protection software, designed to keep hackers away from your bitcoins. Additionally, they could be carried around with you as they are small and can work offline and online.

Repair the Yahoo Search App.

Yahoo Search App from the Google Play Store on my Samsung Galaxy S8+ phone stopped working on May 18, 2018.

I went to the Yahoo Troubleshooting page but the article that said to do a certain 8 steps to fix the problem with Yahoo Services not working and how to fix the problem. Of course they didn't work.

I contacted Samsung thru their Samsung Tutor app on my phone. I gave their Technican access to my phone to see if there was a problem with my phone that stopped the Yahoo Search App from working. He went to Yahoo and I signed in so he could try to fix the Yahoo Search App not working. He also used another phone, installed the app from the Google Play Store to see if the app would do any kind of search thru the app. The Yahoo Search App just wasn't working.

I also had At&t try to help me because I have UVERSE for my internet service. My internet was working perfectly. Their Technical Support team member checked the Yahoo Search App and it wouldn't work for him either.

We can go to www.yahoo.com and search for any topic or website. It's just the Yahoo Search App that won't allow anyone to do web searches at all.

I let Google know that the Yahoo Search App installed from their Google Play Store had completely stopped working on May 18, 2018.

I told them that Yahoo has made sure that their Yahoo members can't contact them about anything.

I noticed that right after I accepted the agreement that said Oath had joined with Verizon I started having the problem with the Yahoo Search App.
No matter what I search for or website thru the Yahoo Search App it says the following after I searched for

I tried to search for things like www.homedepot.com. The same thing happened. It would say WEBPAGE NOT AVAILABLE. The only thing that changed were all the upper and lower case letters, numbers and symbols.
Then it would again say

This is the same thing that happened when Samsung and At&t tried to do any kind of searches thru the Yahoo Search App.

  • Buy bitcoins with cash locally or via cash deposit.
  • Convert PayPal to Bitcoin online.

The above was just a brief overview of where you can buy bitcoin. Now, let's get into the details.

In order to buy bitcoins, you’ll need to exchange your local currency, like Dollars or Euros, for bitcoin. Here’s an overview of the 4 most common payment methods:

1. Credit or Debit Card

Credit/debit cards are the most common way to pay online. So, it's really no surprise that many people want to buy bitcoins this way.

Why buy bitcoin with a credit/debit card?

  • Credit cards are a payment method most people are familiar with; probably the easiest way to buy bitcoins online
  • Delivery of bitcoins is instant once initial verification is complete

Why NOT buy bitcoin with a credit/debit card?

  • High fees; if you're patient and not in a rush to buy then use a bank transfer for lower fees
  • Not a private way to buy; your ID will be required to buy with a credit card

A few places to buy bitcoins online with a credit card are:

Bank Account or Bank Transfer

Bank transfer is one of best ways to buy bitcoins in most countries.

Why buy bitcoins with bank account/transfer?

  • Good way to buy large amounts of bitcoins
  • Using a bank transfer will usually result in the lowest fees, so you can get a great price on your purchase

Why not to buy bitcoins with bank account/transfer?

  • Usually requires ID verification, so not a good choice for privacy

  • Can be more private since in some cases no personal information is required

I really recommend not buying bitcoins with PayPal. The fees are really high. Chances are that your PayPal is connected to your credit card or bank account, which can be used to buy at much lower fees.

However, there are a few hacks to get around this. You can buy other digital items with PayPal and sell those items for bitcoin. It's all explained in our guide on how to buy bitcoins with PayPal.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you're still a bit confused, that's okay. Buying bitcoins is hard, but that's why I built this site, to make it easier!

If you still need help, I hope this FAQ will help to answer any remaining questions.

When is the Right Time to Buy?

As with any market, nothing is for sure. Bitcoin is traded 24/7 and its price changes every second.

Use tools like Bitcoin Wisdom or Cryptowatch to analyze charts from other Bitcoin trading sites. These charts will help you understand Bitcoin’s price history across the many global Bitcoin exchanges.

Why Does Buying Bitcoin Take So Long?

Long wait times are usually a problem with existing payment systems, not with Bitcoin itself.

Bitcoin transactions only take about 10 minutes to confirm. Bank transfers in the U.S., for example, can take up to five days to complete.

Bitcoin transactions can be confirmed as quickly as 10 minutes; it’s rare to experience a delay longer than one hour.

This means that a merchant can’t release bitcoins to a customer until five days have passed unless they're willing to take on risk.

Can You Sell Bitcoins?

Yes, of course! Most exchanges that let you buy bitcoins also let you sell (for a fee of course).

Why Do I Need to Upload my ID for Some Exchanges?

This is due to Know Your Customer (KYC) laws which require exchanges to record the real world identity of their clients.

Can Anyone Buy Bitcoin?

Bitcoin requires no permission to use or buy.

You will have to check the legality of Bitcoin in your country. In most countries Bitcoin is legal!

Should I Buy Physical Bitcoins?

Physical bitcoins are physical, metal coins with a Bitcoin private key embedded inside.

We recommend that you stay away from physical bitcoins unless you’re a numismatist.

While physical coins sound like a good idea, they force you to trust the honesty of the creator of the coin. The creator could create two copies of the private key.

Unless you immediately open and withdraw the digital bitcoins from your physical bitcoin, the creator could at any time steal the funds it contains.

Can I Buy Partial Bitcoins?

Each bitcoin is divisible to the 8th decimal place, meaning each bitcoin can be split into 100,000,000 pieces. Each unit of bitcoin, or 0.00000001 bitcoin, is called a satoshi.

Most exchanges let you buy as little as $5 worth of bitcoins at a time.

Why Should I Buy Bitcoin Instead of Mining?

A long time ago anyone could mine bitcoins on their computer at home. Today, only specialized computer hardware is powerful enough to do this.

Think about it like this:

Should you buy gold or mine gold? Well, to mine gold you need big powerful machines, a lot of time, and money to buy the machinery. This is why most people just purchase gold online or from a broker.

So Bitcoin is no different.

You should just buy some if you want coins without trying to mine.

Do I need a Bitcoin Account Before Buying?

With Bitcoin, there are not really accounts.

Instead, you should have a Bitcoin wallet. If you want to store bitcoins, then a wallet is where you keep them.

In Bitcoin these wallets are not called an account but a wallet functions almost the same way. The only difference is you are responsible for the security if your wallet rather than placing the security in the hands of a bank or trust.

How do I check if I received a Bitcoin payment?

Why Would Someone Even Want to Buy Bitcoins?

There are many reasons people want to own bitcoins.

Many people like to purchase some and put them to the side in the hopes that they will be worth more in the future.

Many people are using bitcoins to remit money to their families from out of the country. Right now, Bitcoin is one of the cheapest ways to do this.

People also use Bitcoin to buy stuff online. Big companies like Microsoft, Dell, Newegg and Overstock all accept bitcoins.

Bitcoin is also very unique compared to other markets in that it trades 24 hours a day and never stops. Most stock markets only open on weekdays from 9 AM to 5 PM. So many traders buy and sell bitcoins because it is a fun and fast market to trade.

Can I Buy Bitcoin Stock?

Bitcoin itself is not a stock despite it functioning somewhat like one. You can’t buy bitcoins through a traditional stock fund and instead have to buy bitcoins yourself. This may change in the future if a Bitcoin ETF ever gets approved.

What Happens When you Purchase Bitcoins?

Bitcoins are actually just secret digital codes. When you buy bitcoins, the seller is using a wallet to transfer the ownership of the coins to you. Once your purchase is complete, the codes are now owned by you and not the seller.

Why Are the Chinese Buying So Much BTC?

It seems the Chinese really like Bitcoin’s properties such as its sound monetary policy and that it can be used anywhere in the world. Bitcoin's volatility also makes it interesting for speculative traders.

Is Bitcoin Legal?

Bitcoin is legal in nearly every country. Only a few countries have actually banned the use of bitcoins. Before you buy, make sure you double-check the legal status of Bitcoin in your country.

Why do I need to buy bitcoins before buying most altcoins?

Bitcoin functions as the "reserve" currency of cryptocurrency. So it is very hard to buy other coins without first buying bitcoins. Once you purchase the bitcoins you can convert the bitcoins into other cryptocoins. This is mostly because Bitcoin has very good liquidity and is traded on every cryptocurrency exchange. So most coins are traded against Bitcoin rather than the US dollar or other fiat currencies.

Am I Anonymous when I Buy?

Bitcoin is not anonymous but rather pseudonymous. All Bitcoin transactions are public but it is not always known the real identity behind any give Bitcoin address.

Can I use Multiple Exchanges?

If the limits on one exchange are to low you can simply open an account with another exchange to give yourself the ability to buy more.

You can signup, join, and use as many Bitcoin exchanges as you want that are available in your country.

Do I need to Pay Taxes on Bitcoin?

In most countries you will need to pay some kind of tax if you buy bitcoins, sell them, and make a gain. In the US you must do this on every transaction.

Be sure to check with your country’s tax authorities to make sure you are paying all the required taxes on your bitcoin use.

What Other Ways can I Get Bitcoins Besides Buying?

Just like any other form of money, you can get bitcoins by requesting from your employer to be paid in bitcoins.

Avoiding Bitcoin Scams: Don't Lose Money!

I've been using Bitcoin for 3+ years. I've never fallen victim to a single scam. Follow the tips explained here and you'll greatly reduce your chances of losing money.

There are many scams related to Bitcoin. Scammers target new Bitcoiners and less tech-savvy users. Follow these basic rules in order to avoid Bitcoin scams:

Study your intended exchange and make sure it’s trustworthy. Search forums like Reddit for the experiences of other users.

You can also use our Bitcoin exchange reviews to get in depth information about certain exchanges. If you don’t find your intended exchange listed on this site, extra caution and research is advised as it may be a scam!

Check Ratings

If you’re using a peer-to-peer exchange like LocalBitcoins or Wall of Coins, check the seller’s feedback. If most of their feedback is positive, your trade is more likely to go through without issues. If a seller has lots of negative feedback, it’s best to simply stay away and find a more reliable seller.

Use Escrow

Many scammers will try an approach like this:

“Send me bitcoins, and once I get the bitcoins I’ll pay you on PayPal!”

Don’t ever agree to a trade like this. Bitcoin payments are irreversible, so if you send first the scammer can simply not pay you and keep their bitcoins.

PayPal can't force the scammer to pay either, due to the pseudonymous nature of Bitcoin which doesn’t record the identity of a payment’s sender or recipient. This would leave you with no way to get your bitcoins back.

Stay Away from Bitcoin investments

Any service that claims to pay interest on bitcoins or increase your bitcoins is likely extremely risky or an outright scam. If it sounds too good to be true, stay away.

Be Careful with Altcoins

What are altcoins? Altcoins are cryptocurrencies other than Bitcoin.

Altcoins are traded globally on hundreds of exchanges. Avoid throwing money into coins which are experiencing a sudden and dramatic spike in price and volume. Such moves, especially in insignificant coins with otherwise thin volume and flat price action, are likely to crash fast.

Secure your Coins

Don't store coins on Bitcoin exchanges! Bitcoin users have lost over $1 billion worth of bitcoins in exchange hacks and scams.

Here are two examples where users got screwed by leaving bitcoins with a third party:

So, do yourself a favor:

Get yourself a Bitcoin wallet and control your own coins. For large amounts of bitcoins, we recommend cryptocurrency hardware wallets. Hardware wallets are small, offline devices that store your bitcoins offline and out of reach from hackers and malware.

Why? It's pretty simple:

  • Hardware wallets are the easiest way to securely store bitcoins and easy to backup
  • Less margin for error; setup is easy even for less technical users
