Bitcoin: How to get it in on the action with your mobile

Bitcoin's a big deal these days, and not just for arms dealers. Here's how you can get in on the action using your Android

You might have heard of Bitcoin. It seems like there isn't a day that goes by just lately without some report in the news on the world's most prominent crypto-currency. Most recently it grabbed headlines when the biggest and most sophisticated hack to date saw the theft of $64 million in Bitcoins. As more and more people realise that this was, and is, a pretty solid way to make money and invest - and that it's somewhat new territory, Bitcoin grabs more and more attention. Tech press coverage is pretty extensive, but with Bitcoin currently all the rage it is increasingly splashed across the major national newpapers and TV channels as well.

Bitcoin has had an incredible year; prices of bitcoin have surged massively during 2016/17, reaching amazing highs as investors look for value investments outside the traditional currency channels.

“The price of bitcoin has surged to more than $14,668,” notes The Guardian, “gaining around $2,000 (£1,494) of value in a day according to bitcoin monitor CoinDesk. That compares with a value below $1,000 at the beginning of the year.”

The nature of how Bitcoin works is highly controversial; it’s digital and, unlike money, is not regulated in most markets like traditional currency and currency trades. And because of its digital nature, it is now a prime target for hackers.

Top this off with the insane price of Bitcoin right now and you have a heady mix of factors that make for plenty of action inside the most popular cryptocurrency market on the planet. How popular is Bitcoin these days? According to reports, Bitcoin mining now consumes more electricity than the whole of Ireland.

But just what is Bitcoin, how do you get some, and can you manage it on your Android? Read on.

What is Bitcoin?

Bitcoin is a virtual currency created in 2009 by a person, or group of people, calling himself/herself/themselves Satoshi Nakamoto. Who Satoshi Nakamoto is, or are, is still the topic of much debate, as no one has ever come forward to say they’re the actual human being who created Bitcoin. But one thing for sure is Satoshi Nakamoto is a cryptographic genius. As a digital currency you would think it would be easy to generate fake Bitcoins or spend the same Bitcoin twice. Not so thanks to Nakamoto’s cryptography.

Every Bitcoin created has a cryptographically generated 64-digit address. Each Bitcoin also has a public key and a private key that unlocks its cryptographically generated addresses. Bitcoin addresses are collectively known as a “wallet” and hold all your Bitcoins. In order to spend your Bitcoins their address must be verified using the public and private keys by a series of decentralized servers (laptops, desktops, dedicated servers, and, increasingly, smartphones) all over the planet.

Because of the advanced cryptography, the verification of these Bitcoin wallets by decentralized servers (known as mining) is a very processor-intensive and time-consuming task. But it also adds a layer of security and confidence in this digital currency. Bitcoin servers are connected via peer-to-peer networks, much like torrent networks, so no centralized server exists.

What is a Bitcoin worth and where can I spend them?

Right now, Bitcoin will make you rich—if you got in early. Back in 2009 a man bought 5,000 Bitcoins for £15 and forgot he had them until news of the currency started exploding earlier this year. He ended up selling those 5,000 Bitcoins a few months ago for £430,000.

Yeah, I want a time machine too.

Bitcoin has been on a wild ride this year. The price exploded to £124 a Bitcoin on some markets in October. At the time everyone thought that was huge. But by November Bitcoin soared to £559.

But Bitcoin prices fluctuate wildly, and if you buy them on an exchange and get in at the wrong time, you can lose a ton of money. However, many now believe the value of Bitcoins can soar ten to a hundred times their current price.

At first you could only spend Bitcoins on random websites—or on the “dark web” where you can buy all kinds of illegal things. But as Bitcoin has risen in prominence, now major websites like Reddit, WordPress, Baidu and several retailers are taking the currency.

How do people get Bitcoins?

You can buy them, or you can mine them. Mining will get you free Bitcoins as rewards for using your hardware to calculate the complex mathematical problem resulting in a 64-digit answer that is required to verify a Bitcoin is legitimate. For every algorithm you solve you are awarded a block of 50 Bitcoins.

But there’s a catch, the difficulty of mining (ie: the algorithms that need solving) are automatically adjusted to make them more or less difficult so that only 50 new Bitcoins are created every ten minutes. This means that the more people that try to mine, the harder it is to get Bitcoins (in other words, more processing power is needed to crack advanced math problems). This helps keep the currency valuable.

Generating Bitcoins is called “mining” because, like mining precious metals in the earth, there is only a set number of Bitcoins that can ever be created—21 million. Right now about 11 million Bitcoins exist, which means only another 10 million can be mined. But if you get even a handful of those ten million, with prices as they are now, you can make enough of it to live on for years…or even the rest of your life.

If you do want to skip mining and just buy Bitcoins, you can do so on one of the many Bitcoin exchanges where you can use physical currency to purchase someone else’s Bitcoins. The biggest Bitcoin currency exchange is Mt. Gox.

Android apps for mining Bitcoins

Okay, so say you want to mine Bitcoins. The best way to do it is by setting up a really sweet PC-rig with the fastest processor, most RAM, and best video card you can. All this power will help your computer calculate the algorithms that will generate the 64-digit code needed to verify Bitcoin transactions. Each time you solve an algorithm, 50 Bitcoins are yours.

Recently, there have also been some Android apps that help you mine Bitcoins. There’s even been a few Bitcoin mining apps that snuck into Apple’s App Store, though the company quickly pulled them.

But, as I said, the thing about mining Bitcoins is that it is a very hardware-intensive task; so unless you have the most recent, cutting-edge Android phone, don’t expect to get far. Also, keep in mind the energy requirements needed to keep your Android powered while running these mining apps. That’s why dedicated PCs or servers are often the best options.

Still, if you do want to give Bitcoin mining a try on your Android, there are a number of apps you could check it out. As always with any Android app, use these at your own risk as Google does not verify the safety or security of Android apps on its Play Store.

I’ve asked around with my Bitcoin mining friends and they say these three apps are the best:

  • DroidMiner BTC/LTC Miner – This is a pretty barebones app that lets you mine Bitcoins in the Getwork pool. Pools are collections of miners working together to mine Bitcoins and split the profits.
  • Easy Miner – Another pool mining app. This one has a little better UI, showing you charts for Bitcoin prices and network hashing rates.
  • LTCMiner – This app, currently in beta, allows you to mine with the Litecoin pool, one of the more popular Bitcoin mining pools. The app has little to offer besides network settings, but it’s worth it for the Litecoin pool support.

Again, keep in mind that, until Android hardware gets much, much faster, you aren’t going to be mining a lot of Bitcoins with these apps. For example, after 8 hours of mining on one of the above apps, my friend only made 0.0005 Bitcoins.

Still, Bitcoin could be a valid contender for the future of currency. If you can get started mining them today, who knows what your stash could be worth in a few years? You could be the next Nathan Mayer Rothschild!

I answered this exact question earlier…. Here was my response.

Negative. You need a computer with a processor capable of handling the “mining.” Mining turns your computer into a mathematical genius, attempting to solve complex algorithms. If your lucky computer gets it “right” then you are rewarded with a multitude of bitcoin. I believe it's somewhere around 12.5.

However; to run just ONE mining computer rig, one can expect to pay as much as $200 extra per month in electricity just to continuously operate the system. The chances of your computer hitting are about that of a lottery. (Assuming you are only running one rig.) Some people have joined mining societies or groups in which those computers involved share the take. But, even this leaves you with only a fraction of a bitcoin and may or may not cover your basic electricity cost for the year. It's also worth noting that your processor can crap out easily from being run so hard 24/7, so there is that expense too.

Real time miners are called farmers, and they have dozens if not hundreds of computers mining at the same time. Essentially there are farming operations that cost as much as $40k+ per MONTH just to operate.

Instead of mining and having to buy a new system AND paying for the electricity at approximately $5k/year, I would personally just buy myself 2 BTC at the going rate. But that's just me.

In theory, yes but your phone will probably die before mining enough crypto to pay itself off. Bitcoin mining difficulty is so high right now that mining with your phone is impossible but mining other altcoins is possible. You can find the minergate app for that but again, it isn’t worth it.

Individuals mining with their phones never made a profit but one individual hijacking a lot of phones makes a difference. There are malicious apps that can turn your phone into a silent miner that is making money for someone else.

Kaspersky reported that there are a number of simple frameworks available that make creating a mobile app that can mine cryptocurrency on mobiles relatively easy. These apps can then be distributed in a number of ways as it is quite common for users to share apps directly via apk file, bypassing the official app stores and the security systems they have in place. Even those security systems have gaps in them, however, that malicious apps can sneak through. Kaspersky noted that the various forms of infected apps were downloaded over 150,000 times from the Google Play Store itself before Google removed them.

This is becoming a common thing right now and you shouldn’t download any app that promises mining Bitcoin in any way. It will most likely put your phone to work for someone else while you will be making pennies by watching ads or something else that will bring even more profit to the developers.

Bottom line - stay safe and don’t even try to mine with your phone. There is no logic to back that up. If you want to find out if you got if your phone is mining for someone else here is a good article that will help you understand how these cams work.

It Takes 14 Million Android Phones to Earn One Bitcoin

Bitcoin, Dogecoins, and other cryptocurrencies have grabbed a lot of headlines for their explosive growth (and bust, and growth, and, well…). The trick is that generating this currency—"mining" it—requires an awful lot of computing power. But wait! Instead of computers, let's use lots of smartphones!

Unfortunately, security company Lookout says that the math on mobile mining just doesn't add up.

Mobile Mining Number Crunch
The numbers say it all. Lookout's researchers calculated that if you're mining for 24 solid hours on a Samsung Galaxy SIII, you'd only earn .00000007 Bitcoin or $0.00004473. In order to make just one Bitcoin in a day, Lookout says you'd need 14,285,714 phones working full-tilt simultaneously.

Bitcoins are hugely valuable (over $600USD per Bitcoin), and therefore require huge resources to mine. But even less valuable cryptocurrency, like Litecoin, are beyond the reach of mobile miners. If you took 3,752 SIII phones and let them work for 24 hours, you'd end up with a single Litecoin which is worth a paltry $8 USD.

Malicious Miners
Despite the overwhelming odds, Lookout's principal security researcher Marc Rogers told Security Watch he has seen numerous malicious Bitcoin miners targeting mobile devices. He estimated there was a new mining variant detected every month. "The kind of folks who are making mobile malware are very, very inventive," he said. "Every new mining system has a new feature. They're trying every direction they can to make it profitable, and that's quite fascinating."

Why then do malicious mobile miners persist? Rogers believes that the benefits of the cryptocurrency (it's free, untraceable, and so on) are simply too tempting for malware creators. There's also a "cool factor" in trying to exploit this new technology. "Early iterations of mining malware did not seem like serious attempts to be profitable, just playing with the technology and seeing what they could do with it," said Rogers. "But it's pretty clear that the later versions are deliberate attempts to be profitable."

Currently, Rogers says that Lookout is seeing mobile miners trying to be more discreet in order to distribute their malware to more victims and keep infected phones mining longer. According to Lookout, instead of working your phone until smoke pours out, sophisticated malicious miners only run when connected to chargers, or when the screen is off. Of course, these kinder, gentler malicious miners can't mine nearly as much per day as more aggressive apps.

There's a Better Way
Of course, there are legitimate Bitcoin mining apps out there, and some developers may be tempted to include mining code in their own applications in the hope of making a little money. However, Rogers says that there is a much simpler way to turn a legitimate profit with mobile apps. It's called advertising.

Before you freak out, remember that Lookout is no friend to malicious or abusive advertising. "Advertising gets a bad rap because we see ad networks that spoil your gameplay or your user experience, but there are good advertising networks out there that are responsible and careful," said Rogers. "Advertising would be thousands of times more profitable for a developer than mining. There's a reason ads have powered the mobile ecosystem."

Case in point, the surprise mega-hit Flappy Bird reportedly earned its creator $50,000 a day in ad revenue.

Mobile Mining Here to Stay
Though Lookout's numbers paint a bleak picture, Rogers that we'll see more mobile mining as phones become more sophisticated. "Maybe a new phone will come out with a GPU accelerator, so they'll try to use that for mining," he said. "Every time there's a new option, we'll see people try to leverage it."

But until you can fit a high-powered computer in your pocket (or a Dogecoin mining NAS), mobile mining will be remain academically interesting but financially flat.

    Repair the Yahoo Search App.

Yahoo Search App from the Google Play Store on my Samsung Galaxy S8+ phone stopped working on May 18, 2018.

I went to the Yahoo Troubleshooting page but the article that said to do a certain 8 steps to fix the problem with Yahoo Services not working and how to fix the problem. Of course they didn't work.

I contacted Samsung thru their Samsung Tutor app on my phone. I gave their Technican access to my phone to see if there was a problem with my phone that stopped the Yahoo Search App from working. He went to Yahoo and I signed in so he could try to fix the Yahoo Search App not working. He also used another phone, installed the app from the Google Play Store to see if the app would do any kind of search thru the app. The Yahoo Search App just wasn't working.

I also had At&t try to help me because I have UVERSE for my internet service. My internet was working perfectly. Their Technical Support team member checked the Yahoo Search App and it wouldn't work for him either.

We can go to www.yahoo.com and search for any topic or website. It's just the Yahoo Search App that won't allow anyone to do web searches at all.

I let Google know that the Yahoo Search App installed from their Google Play Store had completely stopped working on May 18, 2018.

I told them that Yahoo has made sure that their Yahoo members can't contact them about anything.

I noticed that right after I accepted the agreement that said Oath had joined with Verizon I started having the problem with the Yahoo Search App.
No matter what I search for or website thru the Yahoo Search App it says the following after I searched for

I tried to search for things like www.homedepot.com. The same thing happened. It would say WEBPAGE NOT AVAILABLE. The only thing that changed were all the upper and lower case letters, numbers and symbols.
    Then it would again say
    could not be loaded because:
    net::ERR_CLEARTEXT_NOT_PERMITTED

This is the same thing that happened when Samsung and At&t tried to do any kind of searches thru the Yahoo Search App.

Yahoo needs to fix the problem with their app.

    Bitcoin Mining Software Guide

While the actual process of Bitcoin mining is handled by the Bitcoin mining hardware itself, special Bitcoin mining software is needed to connect your Bitcoin miners to the blockchain and your Bitcoin mining pool as well, if you are part of a Bitcoin mining pool.

The software delivers the work to the miners and receives the completed work from the miners and relays that information back to the blockchain and your mining pool. The best Bitcoin mining software can run on almost any operating system, such as OSX, Windows, Linux, and has even been ported to work on a Raspberry Pi with some modifications for drivers depending on your mining setup.

Not only does the Bitcoin mining software relay the input and output of your Bitcoin miners to the blockchain, but it also monitors them and displays general statistics such as the temperature, hashrate, fan speed, and average speed of the Bitcoin miner.

There are a few different types of Bitcoin mining software out there and each have their own advantages and disadvantages, so be sure to read up on the various mining software out there.

    Network Consensus

If you solo-mine, meaning you do not mine with a Bitcoin mining pool, then you will need to ensure that you are in consensus with the Bitcoin network. The best way is to use the official BitCore client.

If you participate in a Bitcoin mining pool then you will want to ensure that they are engaging in behavior that is in agreement with your philosophy towards Bitcoin.

How much bandwidth does Bitcoin mining take? If you are mining with a pool then the amount should be negligible with about 10MB/day. However, what you do need is exceptional connectivity so that you get any updates on the work as fast as possible.

For example, some rogue developers have threatened to release software that could hard-fork the network which would likely result in tremendous financial damage.

Therefore, it is your duty to make sure that any Bitcoin mining power you direct to a mining pool does not attempt to enforce network consensus rules you disagree with.

    Bitcoin Wallet Software

The whole point of mining bitcoins is to earn them!

But once you earn them then where do you keep them safe and secure? For a Bitcoin wallet we highly recommend using one where you hold your own private keys in contrast to to a hosted wallet like Coinbase or Circle.

    • Breadwallet - easy to use mobile Bitcoin wallet
    • Copay - easy to use mobile Bitcoin wallet
    • Armory - highly secure desktop Bitcoin wallet

You will also need to be able to buy and sell your Bitcoins.

Once mined Bitcoin becomes like a currency that can be purchased, used in transactions or even traded like with this Bitcoin trading platform.

    For this we recommend:

    • Kraken - The largest European exchange with same-day SEPA
    • Local Bitcoins - This fantastic service allows you to search for people in your community willing to sell bitcoins to you directly. But be careful!

TRANSCRIPT - Do it yourself with Bitcoin mining software

What's going on every one? This is Fredand this Part 2 of our DIY Bitcoin Miner. Today, we're going to take a look at software.

Okay, so the first thing that you need to do before you could start Bitcoin mining is to sign up for a Bitcoin wallet. Now there’s a lot of wallets that you could choose from but I prefer Circle. Now let’s head over and set up an account. All you have to do is enter in your email and choose a password.

Once you log in to your account you will see a summary of your Bitcoin balance and transactions. But before you can receive any Bitcoins you need to set up a Bitcoin address. You could do so by clicking account settings.

Once you are on the account settings page go ahead and click Bitcoin Addresses. From there click Create New Address. This generates a long string of numbers and letters. This is the address that we will need to enter into our mining pool. So let's take a look at that now.

There are many mining pools that you can choose from, but I prefer BitMinter as my primary pool and Slush’s pool as my backup. Just create an account whichever one you choose and log in. Your account details page will normally have an auto cash out option.

This is where we will enter in our wallet address that we created earlier. When you have mined enough Bitcoins to meet the threshold it would automatically be transferred to your Bitcoin wallet.

Next, go up top to the My Account drop down and select Workers. This worker information is what you need to input into the mining software so that you get credit for the work that is done. You do not need to secure this information with a difficult username or password because anyone that uses this information will be giving you credit.

Now let's take a look at setting up the mining software. As mentioned in Part 1 of the series we'll be using the MinePeon operating system. This can be downloaded from sourceforge.net.

Now this is the image that we will need to write onto our SD card. Another software that we need to download is called the Win32 Disk Imager. This can also be found on sourceforge.net. This is the software that we will use to write the MinePeon image onto our SD card.

Once you have downloaded both files insert your SD card into your computer. Then open up Win32 Disk Imager. Simply select the location of your MinePeon image then select the correct drive for your SD card. All you have to do now is click write. This will write the MinePeon image on to your SD card. Insert the SD card into your Raspberry Pi as shown on Part 1 of the series then power up the unit.

Now sign in to MinePeon by typing in the network IP address into your browser. The easiest way to find this IP address is by logging in to your router and looking for the device called MinePeon. You will then be prompted to enter in your MinePeon's username and password. The default setting for this is MinePeon for the username, peon for the password. You will see a security warning but do not be alarmed. This is perfectly normal so proceed anyways. You will then be asked to re-enter the username and password.

So again, MinePeon is the username peon is the password. You are now finally in MinePeon's dashboard. This is where you can monitor the performance of your mining rig. Head up top and click pools. This page allows you to set up your mining pools. As you can see I have BitMinter as my primary pool and Slush’s pool as my secondary. Just enter in the URL of your mining pool, the username and password if you have one.

Then go ahead and submit your settings. You may need to reboot MinePeon after any changes. Great job every one. You are now officially mining for Bitcoins.

All right, so that should be everything that you need to start Bitcoin mining.

2018’s Best Bitcoin Wallets for your Android Mobile Device Reviewed

Last updated on March 4th, 2018 at 02:30 pm

If you’re looking to store your first Bitcoins and you own an Android mobile device this post is for you. However, before I review the best Android Bitcoin wallets out there I just want to give you a word of warning.

Mobile wallets (Android, or iOS) are the least secure form of Bitcoin wallets. This is mainly due to the fact that mobile devices tend to get stolen, lost and break down. If you hold your Bitcoins in a mobile wallet, it means that the private key is stored on the device, and therefor if the device is ruined or stolen you can’t access your coins.

Having said that, you can always create a backup for your wallet by using the 12-24 word seed phrase shown to you when you first install the wallet. That’s why it’s important to keep this seed phrase in a safe place and out of anyone else’s reach but your own.

If you’re completely new to Bitcoin watch this video regarding Bitcoin wallets, it will probably answer a lot of questions you already have:

And now for the wallet reviews…

#1 – Coinbase – Coinbase IS NOT a Bitcoin wallet

Usually when people think about Bitcoin wallets they think about Coinbase. However Coinbase isn’t a Bitcoin wallet. It’s actually an exchange that lets you hold Bitcoins. In a blog post written by Coinbase’s CEO Brian Armstrong, he states

you’ll see the Coinbase brand shift from being a hybrid wallet/exchange to focusing on purely being a retail and institutional exchange

So while Coinbase is still a cheap place to get Bitcoins, please don’t consider it as a mobile wallet. Coinbase does not give you access to your own private keys nor privacy, as we’ve covered in our review.

The real #1 – MyCelium Android Bitcoin wallet

MyCelium is a popular mobile app wallet that features a wealth of advanced privacy and security features. Yes, the wallet can be a bit complicated for newbie users but it’s still one of the safest and fastest on the market. As an open source software program, MyCelium is constantly being upgraded.

The wallet doesn’t have a web or desktop interface meaning coins can be accessed only through your mobile wallet. The good news is that you can use Mycelium together with a hardware wallet in order to get maximum security for your coins.

#2 – BreadWallet Android Bitcoin wallet

BreadWallet is probably one of the simplest Bitcoin Android wallets around. The source code of Breadwallet is open and there are only very basic “send” and “receive” options featured within the wallet.

This will be very easy for people to get accustomed to on the one hand, but on the other, leaves the wallet exposed without any advanced protection in place. BreadWallet has a mobile version only for Android and for iOS.

#3 – Copay Android Bitcoin wallet

Copay is an open source multisig wallet created by Bitpay. Multisig, stands for multisignature, and it means that the wallet requires a certain amount of people to approve a transaction before it is executed. Kind of like a shared wallet (you can read more about it here).

This is great for security, but makes it harder to send out Bitcoins in some cases. Depending on your needs this just might be what you need. Copay has an Android, iOS and desktop version available.

#4 – Jaxx Android Bitcoin Wallet

Jaxx is a relatively new and controversial wallet. On the one hand Jaxx seems to be a clear winner when it comes to mobile wallets. It has an intuitive interface, can pair across multiple devices (meaning you can use the same funds out of your phone or desktop) and it holds a wide variety of cryptocurrencies (e.g. Ethereum, Litecoin, etc.)

However the main issue with Jaxx is that it’s not open source . Recently there was also a safety concern raised by developers around the community regarding the wallet. This issue has yet to be addressed. Please don’t store a large amount of coins on Jaxx if you don’t have to.

#5 – Airbitz Android Bitcoin wallet

Airbitz is another open source Android Bitcoin wallet you may want to consider. The wallet resembles BreadWallet in its simplicity but also offers a variety of features mainly aimed to support Bitcoin adoption. For example, the wallet displays a wide variety of merchants accepting Bitcoin or place you can buy discounted gift cards with Bitcoin.

#6 – GreenAddress (AKA GreenBits) Android Bitcoin Wallet

If all else fails you should check out GreenAddress. The wallet offers good features, good security and a slightly weak user experience. We’ve reviewed GreenAddress in the past and concluded it to be a solid choice for people who are more experience with Bitcoin.

Please remember the following rules when using a mobile wallet:

    • Always set a pin code protection for your wallet if possible
    • Never store large amounts of Bitcoin on your mobile wallet
    • Write down the 12-24 word seed you get when you set up your wallet and keep in a safe place.

Also keep in mind that not every wallet allowed into GooglePlay is verified. This means some people can create malicious wallet like apps in an attempt to steal your coins once you send them to your mobile wallet. That’s why it’s important to download only known apps and make sure that they are the official app you’re actually looking for.
